16GB Nexus 7 now out of stock in the US

As well as selling out completely in the UK, the Google Nexus 7 tablet is now also unavailable in the US. Just a few days ago, the 16GB model was showing as shipping in 1-2 weeks. Since then, the shipping estimate briefly showed as between 3-4 weeks but, now the page displays a coming soon message. The 8GB model however, shows 3-5 days for shipping in both the US and the UK.

Not only have Google ran out of stock of the 16GB model but, third party retailers such as Best Buy have also run out of stock of the tablet. Third party retailers however, were only selling the 16GB model, while the 8GB model is only available through Google Play.

According to The Guardian, Google underestimated the demand for the 16GB model and also notes that Google anticipated to sell more 8GB units than it has. Google thought that buyers would use the cloud based storage more and save money by buying the 8GB model but, it appears consumers prefer more in built storage and for the price difference between the two, it’s easy to see why many have opted for the 16GB over the 8GB model.

Google haven’t specified a time line for when more 16GB models will be in stock but, The Guardian notes that it “could take some weeks to arrive”.
