20 million Projected iPad Units Sold this June Quarter by Apple

Apple could soon announce that it had sold 20 million iPads within the June quarter this year. The forecast comes from Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company who also made a similar prediction for the same quarter in April.

If the prediction is accurate, the iPad sales could surpass those of the iPhone’s. The figure would be twice the number ofApple iPad units sold during the same quarter last year. Furthermore, it would be a new record for Apple, whose previous record was 15 million units which it shipped during 2011’s lucrative holiday season.

Business and education users are speculated to be two important groups of consumers for Apple. Moreover, the 16 GB iPad 2 which has a price tag of $399 accounted for much of the Cupertino company’s sales.

The fact that the Apple iPad is poised to debut in China on July 20 is also likely to boost the popularity of the iPad. To entice this large market, Apple has translated its services into the Chinese language.

Meanwhile, for the iPhone, Apple will probably sell around 28 million units, 1 million units more than Wolf’s earlier forecast of 27 million. iPhone sales might experience a drop from the 35 million units that Apple sold during the year’s first quarter.

Wolf’s forecast is based on the assumption that users are deferring their plans of buying the iPhone 4S because they are waiting for the likely release of a new iPhone during the fall season.

Apple will release the official earnings for the third fiscal quarter on July 24th.
