Symbian goes open source, might be on netbooks soon

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

As promised last year, Symbian OS is now open source and they are taking the computing world one device at a time. The developer site are having a Wild Ducks project that aims to create a DIY phone much like how most desktops are made today, using off-the shelf hardware and the Symbian OS. They are also trying to install the system on a few other devices.

The Symbian Foundation CEO had high hopes for the operating system and says that we could probably see a full-fledged computer OS based on Symbian in a year or two. Looks like things are really going to get interesting in the mobile system arena with all the new ones floating around.

ViewSonic VNB108 Handled

Friday, February 5th, 2010

A pre-production unit of the new Pinetrail netbook of ViewSonic hit Netbook News and they gave us a hands-on video. The VNB108 is the next iteration from the popular LCD monitor maker and it looks pretty drab to me.

If anything, it's the matte finish that will redeem it but everything else looks to be the same old Atom specs. Here's the video for your viewing pleasure.

Bump your Intel GMA 950 netbook to 1182 x 854 resolution

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

I know some of you out there have a wish that your netbook supported a higher resolution. Maybe it's because you need more screen real estate for your spreadsheet or want to view big images without scrolling. Or maybe you have that one game that you want to play and your netbook specs can handle except for that 1024 x 600 resolution limit.

Well our friends at Samsung feel for you and they have released a driver update for Diamondville laptops with Intel GMA 950 that run on Windows 7 to increase the maximum resolution to 1152 x 864. Here's the driver for that. Some pixels might be squished but if you like what you see, it looks like there are no performance hits observable for this upgrade.

Take note that it might not work on your specific model but it was tested on the Samsung N140. Make sure to have a backup driver ready in case it doesn't work out.
