Aakash 2 Android Tablet to Retail at $49
The government of India aims to distribute Aakash tablet to 200 million students as a digital counterpart of textbooks. The Aakash tablet will have the school curriculum preloaded on it for the convenience of the students. Aakash was touted as the world’s cheapest slate at $35 per unit. However, the first generation Aakash tablet was berated for having a substandard specifications and quality.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal have announced that Datawind, the previous manufacturer of the product, will not be associated with the Aakash 2. The new manufacturers of the tablet PC will be C-DAC and ITI.
The Aakash 2 will most probably retail for around $49 since the original model with a cheaper price tag ended up being 100% subsidized. The upgrade is expected to hit the streets of India in 2012.
