ARM CEO has high hopes for netbooks

British chip maker ARM’s chief exec Warren East has recently proclaimed that netbooks have the possibility of taking over 90% of the PC market. He added that they will move forward and succeed even without support from Microsoft.

East says that netbooks will be “an area for a lot of innovation and we want that innovation to be happening around the ARM architecture.” ARM makes most of the chips in your typical computer, including those in the WiFi module and camera, though the main processor, the CPU, is often from Intel or AMD.

As for Windows support, East is confident that they can make it even without it. Most Windows versions do not fully support the ARM architecture. What he is banking on is the increasing popularity of Linux as an alternative operating system.

I have high hopes for this company once they make better chips since they’re in a lot of mobile devices already. They just need to make an excellent CPU that balances power consumption and speed to make a splash. I’m sure netbook manufacturers will take notice once they do.
