Asus Eee PC 1000h Unboxing Photos and First Impressions

Ok, I finally got my new Asus Eee PC 1000h. This is a replacement to my old Eee PC 701 4G surf which I was able to sell for around $200.  I got the Eee PC 1000h from an online retailer.  It comes with the usual 10-inch netbook fare such as 10-inch display, Intel N270 CPU, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM, 1.3 Webcam, and a Windows XP Home. I got it for around $408.Coming from a 7-inch Eee PC, I found the 1000h definitely bigger and looking more sleeker. There’s not much different in weight despite the HDD. That’s probably because the 6-cell battery was slightly smaller than the Eee PC 701′s battery pack.

Another big difference was of course the glossy bezel which was not present in the Eee PC 701.

Anyway, I will be posting a more detailed review as soon as I got more time using my Eee PC 1000h. My 3 year old daughter is still still busy using it.

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like you overpaid… You can get a 1000HA (it’s nearly what you have) for $300 after mail-in rebate. I suggest you return it ASAP and order the HA. Zipzoomfly.com should ship it pretty fast:

    Better yet, I STRONGLY suggest you order the 1000HE, which is nearly identical, but has an estimated 9.5 hour battery life, 802.11N wireless, and bluetooth. Here’s a recent special price of $350 after mail-in rebate OR you can pay $360 after MIR to get the same 1000HE and a 2GB ram upgrade:

    I’ve been needing a lightweight, well-powered(long battery life) computer but was thinking about replacing the hard disk on this with a solid state…I asked someone on the Net who had one and ‘e said “Asus 1000HE 9.5mm 2.5″ SATA hard drive.” This model measures(3.9 by 2.8 by 0.4) http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-120GB-5400RPM-2-5-Inch-Notebook/dp/B000HD101I
    Would that size work?

    Thomathy,

    That’s the correct size (2.5″ SATA), but item you’ve linked to is a hard drive, not a solid state drive. My 1000HA has the same 160GB drive as the 1000HE and I cannot see any reason to replace it. I haven’t heard of any convincing reasons to switch to SSD… lower capacity, significantly higher cost ratio, and questionable lifetime. One might think SSD is faster than HDD, but check out this comparison video:

    I recommend you stick with the included HDD to save money and enjoy the extra capacity.

    Matt – Thanks for the heads-up. Unfortunately, I’m located in Manila where buying electronic products from outside of the country is nearly close to impossible.

    The price I paid for the 1000H is a good deal enough in Manila’s netbook market standard. Regular stores in sell the 1000H for a few dollars more than what I paid for it.

    How I wish I could order products from Amazon, Zipzoomfly or even Buy.com. Unfortunately it won’t be the most practical thing to do.

    Thanks again! And yeah I’m still loving my Eee PC 1000H, although the HE, HA or even the 1004DN would have been a better option.

    The only reason I want to buy into a Solid state is for a bit more ruggedness. I have a computer with 100GB and after almost two years I have only filled up ~15GB and this is with plenty of pictures, too.
    However, I am beginning to have doubts about any or all claims the products would have(unless you go top o’ the line).

    Prices are coming down, however. I saw an old Fry’s advertisement for a Patriot 64GB Solid State Drive for ~ $150, before rebate.
    I still see Solid State Drives selling for $300-700 for lower capacities.
    One performance thing I read a bit about was the layers of NAND, how if more than one layer, it will be slower but the more layers, the greater capacity to store…
    I’ll give it some time, though. Thanks for your caution ^^
