Asus Eee PC 1000HE put through some preliminary testing by LaptopMag

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is a slight variation of the Asus Eee PC 1000H. It comes with pretty much the same exact features as the original, and in fact it also has the same chassis. But it does sport a slightly better processor, the Intel Atom N280 chip, as well as a much-improved chicklet-style keyboard. LaptopMag was able to get their hands on an Asus Eee 1000HE unit recently, and their first impressions show that this new model is a downright improvement over the old one. Their full review won’t be ready until next week, but until then you can read through their preliminary comments and watch a video showing the Asus Eee PC 1000HE in action.

This 1000HE is an amazing response to user input with a new keyboard, longer battery life and updated processor. But why – why the color restriction to black and blue? The greasy fingerprint black and the blue seem like a nonsense restriction for U.S. distribution. A skin can cover the lid but a white or beige or pink case color is very desirable, and makes me wonder when a research group will reveal that many U.S. users selected the “generic netbook” based on the available colors.
Regardless of the color I think the 1000HE will be a major player during 2009, if they can reach the distribution chain by the end of February. It would help if there was a Linux option based on uBuntu. I don’ t think MS will be able to sell a stepped down Win 7 before 2010, and that will be too late. Looks like the other big impact will be more losses for MS.
The option of going Apple OS X seems to be very attractive. With current pricing I am almost inclined to buy both the 1000HE and a copy of OS X, before tax time. I would wonder why not more support from Apple, or maybe they are only a hardware company, after all?
So here I sit waiting for the UPS truck!

Asus Eee is very convenient to carry. It is my walkaround laptop wherever i go. The battery life could have been better though

i just bought an Asus Eee pc. i was surprised about how lightweight this gadget is. the features are pretty basic for a netbook but it is sufficient for my application.

I must say I always loved the Eee PC from Asus since I first saw it! I'm currently raising the money to buy one and I found a nice place where you can sell used test equipment for a good price.
