According to PC World, the Asus Eee PC has jump-started the new market of ultra-portable, ultra-cheap PC’s. More than 25 notebooks ranging in price from $200 to $350 will be released in the middle of this year. The new machines will be based on Intel’s new Atom platform, previously known as the Diamondville.
The Atom platform is described by Intel as a low-power chip designed for cheap laptops, dubbed ‘netbooks’, and is intended to make simple notebooks for word processing and web surfing inexpensive.
The upcoming Atom based notebooks will have screens ranging in size from 7″ to 10″, with some that can swivel and lay flat against the keyboard, a la modern touchscreen laptops. The devices will be a mix of solid-state and hard drive units, and will offer battery life varying from 3 – 5 hours.
Also following the Eee PC theme is the Linux OS – with major distros already making custom versions for small machines – several in the new wave of notebooks will be shipped with Linux. Others will come standard with Windows.

It’s a good thing to know that the eee pc has opened a new market. This will boost their sales. It seems a fair price for a laptop. I wonder when this would be available in the Philippines.
I like the idea from them to use it together with a Linux or a Windows OS. This has given consumers chosen what OS they would prefer to run it on.
