Asustek Taiwan was recently penalized for false advertising of its Eee PC package. The Taiwan Fair Trade Commission has ordered Asustek to pull out the advertisements saying that those who will buy the Eee PC can get a digital TV receiver worth NT$2,900 if they are willing to pay additional NT$999 when they purchase an Eee PC.

The promotional gig seemed ok but the problem is when asked by the Taiwan FTC to show that the price of the DTV was really $2900, Asustek failed to do so. Hence, the Taiwan FTC deemed it misleading to consumers who might think that they have actually received a discount from their purchase.

After asking Asustek to pull out the ad, the Taiwan FTC then asked the company to pay a fine of around $2,438. The FTC said that such strategy is a clear violation of the fair trade law.

Asustek’s counter statement stated however that when the ad was created, the expected selling price of the said DTV was the same as the price that appeared on the ad.  The problem arised when the product was released at a lower market price.
