Asustek to Launch Android-Powered Eee PC’s Soon

Here’s something that may spark yet another rivalry between Google and Microsoft courtesy of Asustek and the Eee PC. According to a Bloomberg report, Asustek was said to be  preparing to install Google’s Android OS to its low-cost notebooks, which we all know pertains to the Eee PC.

In fact, Asustek has already deployed some of its engineers to develop the said Android-powered Eee PC although there is no concrete plan yet as to whether this will be finalized and released to the market.

But Microsoft remains confident that users will still prefer to buy Windows-powered notebooks despite the affordability of an Android-based netbook.

Gartner analyst Leslie Fiering believe otherwise though. According to Fiering, Android-based netbooks have better chance of succeeding since it may operate faster than Windows-based ones.

The key here is the fact that Android like the Linux OS are very lean and very open platform.

Is it that people are bulldozed into XP. For example a friend of mine went into a UK shop where there were 2 WebBooks on offer: a Linux machine at £199, and an XP one at £299. The salesman asked if my friend used Microsoft Messenger, he replied yes. The salesman then explained that he would not be able to use Microsoft Messenger on the Linux machine. He then went on to say that it was just not compatible, and then stated that my friend would be unable to Message on the Linux machine. No mention of using Pidgin which was already loaded on the Linux machine.

As long as I can operate standard Microsoft applications like MS Word and Excel I really don't care what device it is that I am using or even if I'm working on used computers or not. The problem as I see it has been trying to make the step over to a different OS where the availability of my familiar world is not made easy. That plus familiarity makes all the difference in the world to me.

Is it more important to know the brand you carry or understand the applications which make your life a little bit easier?
