Since it’s almost the end of the year, it looks like we won’t be seeing an ultra-cheap Eee PC anymore. But Asustek is not totally abandoning on our hopes and even express confidence that the $200 Eee PC might actually come our way by 2009.

None other than Asustek President Jerry Shen expressed this optimism on releasing a $200 Eee PC as he announced that Eee PC shipments for the 3rd quarter this year reached 1.7 million units and his company is aiming to release some more 1.8 million units of the Eee PC before the year ends – reaching the Eee PC’s target goal for 2008 of 5 million units.

Shen also said that Asustek has recently adjusted prices of its mid-range and entry-level Eee PC’s hence the company is positive that bringing down the manufacturing costs would enable them to release the cheap Eee PC.

Relatedly, Asustek also said that the 7-inch and 8.9-inch Eee PC’s will soon be phased and will be replaced by the bigger 10-inch Eee PC. So, finally we won’t be seeing anymore variants of these netbooks from Asustek.
