UK Retailer Recalls Webbook - Linux Not PopularPosted by: QueenB in 10-inch, Elonex, Netbook, eeepc, tags: Elonex, Linux, webbook, xpIt seems like consumers aren’t quite as ready to pick up a netbook running Linux and use it happily, as one UK retailer had hoped they would be. Windows OS seems to be the OS that Carphone Warehouse customers prefer anyway. The company are recalling it’s own brand of netbooks (their ‘webbook’) from every store in order to replace them with a more ‘consumer friendly’ netbook with Windows OS installed.
The recall isn’t due to any fault with the units, it’s simply a response to their customers who are finding the Linux operating system confusing and many are actually returning the netbook because of it. CW are footing the bill for the recall and subsequent installation of the new OS which according to Mobile Today will cost around £25 per netbook to license them with Windows XP.
The 10.2 inch CW netbook was released in July and is a unit built by Elonex for the UK retailer. Consumer demand has been good for the netbooks which is offered free with mobile broadband subscriptions. The retailer is now offering other models including a Toshiba NB100 and the Asus Eee PC 701 model.

Sound Issue Resolved for OS X Eee PC’sPosted by: QueenB in 10-inch, 9inch, MSI Wind, Netbook, asus, competitor, eeepc, tags: asus, Eee PC, hackintosh, os xIf you are one of those adventurous Eee PC owners that have had the desire to install OS X on your netbook and turn it into a “Hackintosh” then you may be pleased to know that thanks to some persistant hackers and a new application, your sound issues - it has been virtually impossible to get sound working when using OS X on an Eee PC until now - can all be solved. Hackers have created a work around, similar to the method used to get sound working on the MSI Wind. You need to install a different audio driver and the Apple developer tools first of all and then grab the new application that developer ipis OS X have created. Audieee allows the sound to be controlled from the menu bar on OS X, allowing you to switch between headphones/speakers as your output of choice, something that doesnt happen automatically yet but, be sure there is a hacker somewhere working on a fix for this too.

Lenovo S10 to get a high capacity battery?Posted by: QueenB in 10-inch, Lenovo, Netbook, competitor, tags: battery, Lenovo, s10There are pictures circulating on the internet currently that shows a Lenovo S10 sporting a 6 cell battery - something that Lenovo haven’t announced that they are making yet. The images show the netbook and show that the battery is protruding from the rear of the unit just like 6 cell batteries do. We don’t think it’s a Lenovo battery and there is no firm details on where the battery came from or who is making/selling them. It could be a prototype possibly. Wherever it came from, it will hopefully be available to S10 owners soon and we will let you know as soon as we get more information on the battery and on whether it will be available officially from Lenovo worldwide.

On offer this Black Friday is a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for $299, a saving of at least $50 on the usual $349 for the base model. Netbookreports have picked up the info from BlackFridayDeals who have the Dell netbook listed as: “Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Laptop 8.9″ E-Value Code 16254-DNPHXD2 - $299.00″ That doesn’t give us a great deal to go on regarding specs or extras that may be on offer so I suggest you keep a close eye on the Dell website for the definite details on the offer as they come up. I know that’s what I’m going to be doing!

No Netbook Partnership for VIA and NVIDIAPosted by: QueenB in Netbook, VIA, accessories, competitor, tags: C7, chipset, nano, Netbook, nvidia, VIAVIA sources have indicated that they and Nvidia have suspended the deal that was set up in April this year, to work on a platform for netbooks and MID’s together. This was to be a another ‘cooperation’ between the two companies that are already working together to build desktop PC components, that could have seen the VIA C7 and Nano processors paired with MCP79 IGP chipsets which could have seen the two companies become a bigger ‘player’ in the netbook phenomenon.
