Asus recently confirmed they were going release some new ultrabooks in their home country Taiwan. We can now confirm that Asus are bringing four ultrabooks to the US market.

The ultrabooks feature the latest Intel Core processor most commonly known as Ivy Bridge. They will also have 1080p IPS displays. The four models that will be released in the US are the UX21A, UX31A, UX32A and UX32VD. All of the ultrabooks will have a 1920×1080 display, including the UX21A which will have an 11 inch display, while the other three ultrabooks feature a 13 inch display. They will also feature a re-tooled keyboard, which makes the pitch 12% deeper as well as being backlit. The touchpad has also been tweaked.

The UX32A uses hybrid hard drives, while the UX31A uses SSD. The UX32VD differs to the UX31A as it has an NVIDIA GT 620M GPU but, apart from that they are pretty much identical. The 13 inch models will start at $999 but, as of yet there is no pricing information for the 11 inch UX21A but, we do know that there will be two different configuration models. One with an i5 processor and 128GB SSD, while the other configuration will have an i7 and an optional 256GB drive. Other than announcing the ultrabooks for the US, there’s no information on a release date.

Back in March we heard that Acer were releasing an Olympic version of their Iconia A510 in the UK, in time for the Olympic games which are being held in London this year. Exact release information and pricing were previously unknown but, we can now confirm that the Olympic styled Acer Iconia A510 will go on sale next month in the UK.

The Olympic model features the same specifications as the standard A510, which includes a 10.1 inch display, a 1.3GHz quad core Tegra 3 processor, 5 megapixel camera, 32GB of internal storage and runs on Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. The special edition model however has the five Olympic rings engraved on the back of the tablet. Acer are also preloading the tablet with a trial of Eurosport channels.

Carphone Warehouse will begin selling the Olympic A510 in June with a price tag of £350. Like before however, there’s still no word on whether this will see a release outside of the UK.

Asus have made it super easy to unlock the bootloader on the Transformer Pad 300. The Transformer Prime was the first Asus Android tablet to receive an official bootloader unlocked and Asus have continued the trend with the bootloader unlock tool for the Pad 300.

Even though it is an official bootloader unlocking tool, doing so does still void your warranty and you won’t be able to update your tablet the official way. When Apple announced the third generation iPad, they announced that there would not only be the standard Wi-Fi only model but, also a Wi-Fi and 4G. However as the UK doesn’t have a 4G infrastructure yet, there were complaints over the use of the term 4G. Apple also fell foul in Australia with the 4G reference.

In light of this, Apple have quietly changed the 4G references on their website and instead it’s been replaced with “Wi-Fi + Cellular”. This is true for the UK and Australia, as well as New Zealand and South East Asia. It’s also been changed to “Wi-Fi + Cellular on Apple.com which serves the US and Canada. In America, 4G is already available but, presumably it’s been changed on the US site and world wide for that matter so that all of Apple’s stores provide the same information and naming system to stop any confusion.

When Sony announced the VAIO T13 and it’s smaller sibling the T11 the press release and information from Sony indicated that both models would ship with an Intel Core i3-2367M processor which is good but, last gen. However over on Sony’s German site, the specifications sheet lists the T13 ultrabook to come with one of Intel’s latest chips on board. The Intel Core i5-3317U, aka Ivy Bridge is currently found in Samsung’s Series 9.

It’s unknown whether the i5 processor will replace the i3 or, if it will be a different or customizable model.

As well as the Sony VAIO T13 ultrabook, Sony will also be releasing a smaller version of their T series ultrabook. The T13, as the model number suggests, comes with a 13 inch display, 13.3 inchs to be exact, while the T11 comes with an 11.6 inch screen.

Both the T11 and T13 feature the same specifications, or hardware choices. The only difference between the two models does appear to come down to screen size along, which should also give them different price points. Both Sony ultrabooks should be available in the UK from early June.

To recap, the T series ultrabooks feature 4GB RAM, Intel i3-2367M CPU, 32GB SSD and a 320GB hard drive, HDMI and VGA ports, USB 2.0 and 3.0, along with Bluetooth 4.0, an ethernet port and Wi-Fi.

A few days ago we heard that Nokia were planning on releasing tablets and hybrid devices. The comments were made by Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila who was quoted to have said that “Tablets are an important [market], so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future.”

We’re now hearing however that the comments were “misconstrued” a bit. Keith Nowak a Nokia spokesperson confirms that no tablet announcements or hybrid devices have been announced and that they are watching the tablet market. Nowak told eWEEK “What Mr. Ollila said has been misconstrued a bit. As we have been saying, we are watching the space with interest, but have made no announcements regarding a tablet product.”

While a tablet hasn’t been officially announced by Nokia, the comments by Nowak indicate that the possibility of a Nokia tablet hasn’t been completely dismissed by the company.

When Apple announced the third generation iPad known simply as the “new iPad”, their second generation iPad models saw a price reduction with the price point now starting at £329 compared to £399. What Apple neglected to mention however, is that the iPad 2 has had a small hardware upgrade.

The original iPad 2 had a 45nm A5 processor, while newer iPad 2 models are shipping with a 32nm processor. These are more power efficient and give and estimated 16% improvement in battery life for browsing and is estimated to offer 30% more battery life while gaming.

Of course there will be some of the old model’s floating around and unfortunately the only way to tell if you have the improved iPad 2 is by using an app such as Linpack or Geekbench to identify the model number. The iPad 2s with the newer processors have the model number iPad2,4 while older models will be iPad2,1, iPad2,2 and iPad2,3. It’s also likely that the iPad 2s with the older 45mn processor will have 5.0.1 or older running while newer iPad 2s should have 5.1 out the box.

While other manufacturers have been producing and releasing ultrabooks for a while now, Sony have announced their first entry into the ultrabook market. The Sony VAIO T13 will feature a 13 inch display, with HDMI and VGA connection ports, along with a RJ45 network port and SD/MMC memory card slot. The Sony VAIO T13 ultrabook will also feature xLOUD which has recently been added to Sony Xperia mobile phones, along with Clear Phase to make listening to music, or watching movies on it a joy.

The chassis is made of aluminium and magnesium making it thin and light weight. Other features of the T13 include Rapid Wake, allowing the ultrabook to wake within seconds and will feature Eco functions. The VAIO T13 will be powered by an Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM and run Windows 7 64bit. Graphics wise, the ultrabook will include Intel HD Graphics 3000.

Pricing and availability is currently unknown but, we could see the Sony VAIO T13 hit the market as early as next month.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard rumours surrounding an “iPad Mini” from Apple but, more rumours have come about citing Q3 release for a smaller iPad. Previous rumours suggested that Apple would launch a mini iPad along side the third generation iPad announced April 7th. No such announcement was made at Apple’s press conference however.

NetEase however claim that Apple will launch a smaller iPad in the third quarter of this year to fight off competition from the Amazon Kindle Fire. The iPad Mini is rumoured to feature a 7 inch display, the same size as found on the Kindle Fire and will also have a similar price tag of around $200.
