BIOS Update for EeeBox B202 for Shutting Off Fan

eeebox

If you purchased Asus’ first nettop, the EeeBox B202 not so long ago, chances are you might have already noticed that even though  Asus packed it with a fan inside to reduce heating problems. Heating problem is of course common among computers with small form factor.

So the fan inside would have been a great solution but the problem is users found out that it doesn’t seem to shut off especially when it is not reall needed.

The solution? Blogee.net discovered that Asus has made available a BIOS update  which you can download here.

I’m tempted to buy these for our business. Since moving away from having apps running locally and into the cloud (have to love google apps) we have no need for a full fat PC.

We bought several as emergency backup machines at a local hedge fund operation. The boot time is a bit long and the performance only just acceptable, but for running web apps they would be quite acceptable. We bought the 1G/80G XP versions, since the options-price software we needed to load was only available for Windows, and mounted the computers to the back of 23″ HD LCD panels, making for a nice tiny install. The built in 802.11 is very convenient too; we can leave them booted and attached via WLAN for OS and virus updates.

I’ve just bought a B202 off eBay to use as a workgroup server for a small software development operation. We’ll load it with Linux (or maybe FreeBSD, if the WiFi drivers work) and put Subversion and Redmine on it. I’m expecting these will make great little servers.
