Before the Eee PC became such as big hit, OLPC’s $100 laptop was being touted as the PC for the masses. However, due to some unavoidable reasons, the OLPC project never really quite made it through the mainstream. Well for one, it was geared use by children in the under developed countries and not really so much for commercial use.

But despite this objective, the response and interest to the OLPC was still lackluster. One reason could be the unpopularity of the Linux OS as an entry level computing OS and does not have the same appeal as Windows OS.

Enter Microsoft and OLPC’s agreement to bring the Windows XP to the OLPC. And the first units of the OLPC XO powered by Windows XP will soon hit the streets sometime in June.

Will the Windows XP finally push the XO towards the mainstream market? That we will have to see.
