Android is now being used by different devices including business tablets and smartphones. Sometimes, though, one just need to have a full-fledged OS to get something done. Windows 8 is certainly looking to be a good thing for mobile users with its functionality. SDG Systems announced a rugged tablet with a full desktop operating system: Ubuntu.

The tablet is called Trimble Yuma. It is a slight redesign to the previous Windows 7 business tablet. It has slightly updated specs. The hardware it boasts matches up nicely with netbooks. It is a 7-incher powered with a 1.6GHz Atom processor. It has WiFi, Bluetooth and 32GB or 8GB SSD. It has additional consumer/business oriented features like GPS, dual cameras and SDHC and ExpressCard slots.

As far as ruggedized is concerned, the Yuma looks superior compared to other rugged hardware out there. This tablet has magnesium alloy case to protect it from water and dust. It meets the United States Military Standard for durability and has an Ingress Protection rating of 67.

Last year, it has been reported that Canonical plans to bring the Ubuntu OS to mobile gadgets. It does not appear that SDG Systems is affiliated with Canonical but from the looks of it, it might be actually. Unfortunately, their device has been designed strictly for the business side of things. This baby is priced at $3695.

The Trimble Yuma is indeed a pretty cool device for being almost indestructible with a full-fledged OS. The KDE Spark tablet is a consumer alternative.

The teXet TM-7025 should be device that anyone could hope for. This slate runs Android 2.3.4 with Ice Cream Sandwich update promised. The device is priced at a mere $200, so it’s a budget offer.

This slate uses a Boxchip A10 Cortex A8 processor (1GHz), supported by 512MB of RAM. Buyers will also get 4GB of internal memory with microSD card slot for expanded storage. Most of all, the teXet TM-7025 sports a 3D accelerator in a 7-inch capacitive TFT LCD display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and 5 point multitouch. HDMI will also give this model quad full HD resolutions when playing back content.

It also appears that this model also has a nifty feature that allows users to connect to a 500GB hard drive without extra power supply and up to 1 TB with optional power supply.

This is the first 3D tablet mode made by teXet. Other features include WiFi, a 0.3 megapixel front camera, a 3100 mAh Li-Ion battery, a miniUSB port and a chassis that measures 12.1mm in thickness. The device weighs 370 grams and everything sounds too good to be true.

The price tag for this slate begins at $200. It has already begun selling in Russia, but this should be out to other countries soon.

Chinese tablet manufacturer, Zenithink, is making Google Android 4.0 available for most of the company’s recent 7 and 10 inch tablets. This includes the Zenithink C71, which gained a bit of attention after the developer, Aaron Seigo, announced that it would be the basis of the new Spark tablet with KDE Plasma Active Linux software.

While the Spark will come with its Linux-based, Zenithink C71 can already be purchased for as low as $126. For that price, users will get a model with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This can be upgraded to Android 4.0. Users can also build their own Spark Tablet by installing the Mer Linux distribution and KDE Plasma Active software environment.

The Zenithink C71 isn’t exactly a top-of-the-line tablet. It sports a 7 inch display, 800 x 480 resolution and runs on a 1 GHz Amlogic 8726-M ARM Cortex-A9 processor. The processor is backed by 512MB of RAM as well as 4GB of storage.

Apart from this, the company also makes a C72 tablet with a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display as well as several 10 inch tablets.

AT&T is now offering Huawei MediaPad. Though the price remains unknown as of the moment, it should play around $100 on contract.

Huawei MediaPad was the first slate to have Android 3.2 Honeycomb right from the start, without an update, so that’s got to count for something. On T-Mobile, the MediaPad was rebranded as Springboard, while it’s known as the Orange Tahiti in Europe on the carriers Orange UK and Orange Romania. This costs around 50 euros with a pretty big contract.

Back to the AT&T version, buyers will get the usual 7 inch IPS 1280 x 800 pixel display. The device runs on a 1.2GHz dual core processor and it is promised to get an Android 4.0 update.

The device also sports a 5 megapixel camera, a 1.3 megapixel front cam as well as support for 1080p video recording and playback. WiFi connectivity is also included in the spec list.

There are also rumors that LTE will also make its way to this model since an affordable tablet with top notch connectivity and great specs is all what the public want right now.

A 4 GB of internal storage is available as well as a microSD card slot for expanded memory.

Spark tablet is also WiFi capable, so users will be able to enjoy surfing the internet outside their home. Moreover, Spark runs a version of MeeGo Linux, Mer, while the KDE Plasma Active UI layer will be applied on top of Mer.

The Spark tablet is made to be as open as possible so that users can customize their experience however they want. Still, they can install Android on the tablet, if desired. The tablet ships in May, so there’s plenty of time to make plans.

With 7-inch wide screen, 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, multimedia functions, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, wider range of memory storage and digital pen features, you can now do and see more with this gadget.

Some have claimed to try upgrading this tablet to Android 4.0 ICS. While few members of the Xda developers’ forum said to have taken effort but refused, because it’s still on the earlier stages which might result for possible problems while using this new operating system like non-functional cameras. However, it’ll enhances the digital pen features.

Techies are really going fast over this constant technology evolution. But then, HTC has also stated typical warnings about this. Once you upgraded the Flyer tablet, it will definitely lose its warranty.

Well, changes aren’t always negative but we should also remember to play it safe. Apparently, HTC will release an official version shortly.

Fujitsu isn’t that big when it comes to mobile computers. However, the Japanese company is looking to change that with its new tablet, the Stylistic M350/CA2. The tablet aims to business users.

The 14mm (0.55-inches) thin 7-inch Fujitsu tablet tips the scale at only 420g (a little less than 0.93 pounds). It looks pretty more like the other enterprise-oriented slates the company have released, except for the inclusion of a series of hardware buttons placed along its bottom edge. However, underneath is a lot different.

The Stylistic M350/CA2 is based on a Freescale i.MX ARM SoC that includes a single Cortex A8 core running at 1GHz. The SoC is paired together with 512MB high speed DDR3 and supports Flash 11 as well as 1080p video playback either on the tablet’s screen or on an external display that can be connected via the provided mini-HDMI connector. All of these are powered by a 20Wh battery which can deliver excellent battery life, though no estimate running time was given.

As far as software is concerned, the Stylistic M350/CA2 tablet will actually run the 2.3 version of Google’s mobile operating system.

The Stylistic M350/CA2 will be initially available in Japan for a price of ¥34,800 (about $454 or 345 EUR). No further announcement on whether Fujitsu will sell this tablet in other markets.
