The 18mm-thin reference machine, which AMD demonstrated at its current financial forecast day, was manufactured by Compal and illustrates AMD’s latest Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), dubbed Trinity, which will be available later this year.

Corroborating earlier reports that AMD is seeking to weaken Intel Ultrabooks on cost, AMD’s alleged Trinity-based lightweight laptops will retail between $600 and $800 by Q2. In fact, the current wave of Ultrabooks goes for around $900 or double that price, with the introduction of AMD ultrathin laptops buyers could see this as a significant alternative.

AMD also pledges its Trinity-based laptops will top “the competition” (undoubtedly Ultrabooks), with 50% superior graphics performance and over 12 hours of battery life. And with the latest chips, performance per watt over AMD’s will have double the present Llano chips.

Although AMD has always played second fiddle to Intel, now with lower prices, superior battery life, and enhanced graphics performance, Trinity laptops may truly give Ultrabooks more opposition than Intel could have projected. And if this push down prices on laptops in general, consumers will be the winners.

AMD mentioned in a recent analyst event that the chip maker has started manufacturing processors in IBM’s foundries in a possible attempt to boost production of its upcoming A-Series Trinity APUs. AMD’s processors and APUs were usually made by Globalfoundries, an independent semiconductor foundry created in March of 2009, after AMD spun off its chip fabrication business.

Despite the close partnership between the two companies all throughout 2011, AMD complained about the performance of Globalfoundries while the latter had some production issues with its leading fabrication technologies. These led AMD to revise its chip fabrication deal with Globalfoundries in April last year in order to pay only for the working chips produced.

AMD’s decision to start producing chips at IBM is expected to boost its ability to compete in terms of volume with Intel. This increase in manufacturing capacity should be a big help for AMD’s next-gen Trinity APUs, which target a wide range of market segments, from ultrathin notebooks to desktops.

According to AMD, these changes are expected to provide more compute performance than Llano, superior entertainment potential, longer battery-life as well as better graphics. Trinity APUs are scheduled to arrive during the middle of this year.

Most of the top PC makers have already entered the ultrabook bandwagon, using the latest Intel processors, quick boot technology as well as other newfangled features on their devices. While Intel has trademarked the word “ultrabook” it certainly doesn’t have the monopoly on ultraportable laptops.

However, chip maker, AMD, believes that computer makers would consider slapping in some of its latest chips to thin and light laptops in the coming year. In fact, they just showed a notebook computer prototype that measures 0.7 inches thick. It runs on a low voltage AMD Trinity multi-core processor, which will have a TDP of 25 Watts or less.

The particular model was produced by Taiwanese manufacturer Compal and will probably never actually make it to market. However, this just shows what ultrathin notebooks from AMD could look like.

The only difference is that AMD thinks that PC makers could sell notebooks like this for $500 and up, while ultrabooks might still sell for $900 or more.

Acer has just started selling its latest nettop based on AMD’s high-end Brazos APU for $329.99, or 251 EUR. The new Revo RL70 bears a strong resemblance to the rest of the company’s nettops, but this time it received a somewhat more refined design that won’t make it feel out of place in the leaving room, near your HDTV.

The Revo RL70 runs on AMD E-450 accelerated processing unit, which sports dual Bobcat x86 processing cores clocked at 1.65GHz. Its graphics capabilities, on the other hand, is driven by Radeon HD 6320, featuring some impressive multimedia capabilities. It also comes with a 500GB hard drive, together with 2GB of DDR3 system memory.

Despite its small size, the Acer nettop comes with a range of ports and connectors, including audio jacks, four rear USB 2.0 ports, two frontal USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as VGA and HDMI video outputs. A multi-format card reader, WiFi connectivity and an S/PDIF audio output is also included to the specs list.

If these specs are to good for home use, the E-450 powered Revo RL70 is now available on Amazon for $329.99 (251 EUR). The Acer Revo RL70 system also comes with a keyboard and mouse, so everything you need is included inside the box.

A new laptop that is designed specifically for hardcore gamers is set to be launched by Dell. The laptop is called the Alienware M14X R2.

Dell appears to be releasing this laptop alongside the launching of Intel’s next-generation Ivy Bridge series 22nm processors. Said CPUs are ideal for gamers since they offer better performance than processors previously released by Intel.

The Ivy Bridge processor is the first to utilize trigate transistors which cuts down on power consumption. It also features Intel HD graphics, PCI express support, 4k video playback, as well as RAM support for 2800MT/s.

Compared with their previous release, this new processor would have about 20 percent increase in CPU performance, as well as about 30 percent increase in GPU performance.

Apart from the Ivy Bridge 22nm processor, the Dell Alienware M14X R2 Gaming Laptop is expected to have AMD Radeon HD 7970M partnered with either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M as their graphics card.

This laptop is expected to be available in red and black. To date, there is no word as to when the public may avail of the Alienware M14X R2 Gaming Laptop, or how much it will cost.

This January, the Android-x86 project, which is an open-source project to give Android support on the x86 platform, made available a test Android 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for AMD Brazos-powered tablet PCs. The result is a working, but rather imperfect, software. For instance, testers were able to do some scrolling and game-playing. Force closes, however, as well as freezes, were frequent.

This demo was shown at the CES where Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich was spotted running on a the MSI WindPad 110W tablet. Said MSI WindPad tablet, which was originally running on Microsoft Windows, had been hacked to run the Android OS.

Meanwhile, there remains no official support for Android released by AMD. This means that there might be no AMD Android tablet, or at least a legitimate one, to hit the market soon. There is, however, speculation that AMD as well as MSI could bank on one running on Windows 8.

In any case, this collaborative developing by a community using Android’s source code is good news for AMD. The company can now merely wait for the necessary tweaks to be done for them and save money in the process. For consumers, this might mean less costly devices, too, as AMD is generally less inexpensive than Intel’s processors.

Back at the CES 2012, AMD’s suite at CES 2012 featured an AMD Fusion tablet with Android 4.0 as its OS. Do not be overexcited, AMD was quick to point out that the MSI WindPad 110W did not get the ICS on its own. The Android-x86 project is the culprit behind the OS being ran on an AMD Brazos-based tablets like the one above.

The good news is that if you have the tablet you can download the ROM yourself and start installing your way. However, AMD does not officialy support such endeavor and it is not expected that all AMD devices could run Android in the future. The bigger news is that the Android-x86 project is supported by the AMD to the point that the company donated some development boards last April. As of October the AMD “Persimmon” platform of embedded processors are the target for a new code.

Android 4.0 is not perfect running on AMD chips. It did run and play some game but the tablet freezes every now and then.

After its introduction of the Edge HD nettop six months ago, Sapphire has unveiled a new version of the mini-PC that runs on a more powerful AMD accelerated processing unit. The present EDGE HD2 nettop is operated by a dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor which runs at 1.8GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and Nvidia second-generation ION graphics.

The new Edge HD model was presented at the CES fair last week and it carries pretty much the same chassis as its Intel counterpart, only this time it is reported to draw its power from an E-450 APU, which is the fastest Brazos chip available so far. It also sports dual Bobcat x86 processing cores clocked at 1.65GHz as well as Radeon HD 6320 integrated graphics with impressive multimedia capabilities. The said processor is paired with 4GB of DDR3 system memory and a 320GB hard disk drive.

For the connectivity, the system features two USB 2.0 ports, an mic and audio jacks, an Ethernet port, VGA and HDMI video outputs as well as USB 3.0 ports. Built-in WiFi is also included, while the power consumption of the Sapphire nettop is estimated at a low 30 Watts.

The E-450 powered Edge HD model is expected be available in February, this year with a base price of $300.
