While a lot of notebook announcements are based on Intel processors, many people are wondering what in the world happened to all the AMD mobile processors.

Fortunately, Toshiba’s Satellite L series of notebooks actually puts AMD processors to work this time. This also goes for AMD’s graphics since the notebooks will use Radeon HD Series GPUs instead of NVIDIA GPUs in the P series.

The Satellite L series is made up of five models, L855 (15.6-inch screen), Satellite L875 (17.3 inches), Satellite L830 (13.3 inches), Satellite L850 (15.6 inches) and Satellite L870 (17.3 inches).

The L855 and L875 pair their Intel/AMD chips with AMD graphics, with up to 2 GB memory. They have LCDs with 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution on L855 and 1600 x 900 pixels on the L875.

Hard drives are up to 1TB of storage space, while a Blu-ray drive or SuperMulti DVD unit covers the optical storage side. Furthermore, Toshiba implemented Gigabit Ethernet (on Intel machines) or Fast Ethernet (on AMD laptops).

Other specs include HD webcams, HDMI, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 with sleep-and-charge, SRS Premium Sound HD and Premium Speaker design.

The L830, L850 and L870 get much the same as above, though they only get HD screens, except for the L870 that has the other, better option (1,600 x 900 pixels).

There are no pricing details, yet shipments should start in the second quarter, which can mean anything from next month to June, 2012. They come in different color options: blue, silver, white, red or black gloss.

Acer launched its latest mini-desktop called the Revo 70. Like the company’s existing nettops, the Revo 70 isn’t much larger than a DVD drive, though it doesn’t really have one. However, this little computer share some features of a reasonably fine ultraportable notebook. The R70 measures 8.26″ x 8.26″ x 2.13″ and weighs just 2.2 pounds.

The Acer Revo 70 is operated by a 1.65 GHz AMD E-450 dual core processor, paired together with Radeon HD 6320 graphics, 2GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. The nettop runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Additional features include 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Ethernet, HDMI output, a VGA port, 6 USB ports, an SD card slot as well as audio jacks.

The Revo 70 has a list price of $329.99 on Acer’s retaill site. However, most of the retailers that have the computer in stock right now are charging no more than to $380. Despite its high price tag, this awesome nettop might lower its cost soon.

We now have another big shocker here, Gateway’s new LT4004U. The self-proclaimed netbook comes powered by a processor from Intel Atom Cedar Trail – and you know how the company has largely avoided netbooks while in the end looking to single out with the “ultra-portable” Athlon Neo CPU.

Cedar Trail 1.6 GHz N2600 processor is what’s running the show here, as well as integrated Intel GMA 3600 integrated graphics card, WXGA resolution, Memory of up to 1GB and 250GB HDD, card reader, webcam, three USB 2.0 port, 802.11b/g, and a 6-cell Li-ion battery pack installed. Looks like they are back after shielding away from Atom, then, instead Windows Vista Basic we got Windows 7 starter for the OS. Available in Black-white stripped (zebra-like), it’s already retailing (asking $280).

The 18mm-thin reference machine, which AMD demonstrated at its current financial forecast day, was manufactured by Compal and illustrates AMD’s latest Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), dubbed Trinity, which will be available later this year.

Corroborating earlier reports that AMD is seeking to weaken Intel Ultrabooks on cost, AMD’s alleged Trinity-based lightweight laptops will retail between $600 and $800 by Q2. In fact, the current wave of Ultrabooks goes for around $900 or double that price, with the introduction of AMD ultrathin laptops buyers could see this as a significant alternative.

AMD also pledges its Trinity-based laptops will top “the competition” (undoubtedly Ultrabooks), with 50% superior graphics performance and over 12 hours of battery life. And with the latest chips, performance per watt over AMD’s will have double the present Llano chips.

Although AMD has always played second fiddle to Intel, now with lower prices, superior battery life, and enhanced graphics performance, Trinity laptops may truly give Ultrabooks more opposition than Intel could have projected. And if this push down prices on laptops in general, consumers will be the winners.

AMD mentioned in a recent analyst event that the chip maker has started manufacturing processors in IBM’s foundries in a possible attempt to boost production of its upcoming A-Series Trinity APUs. AMD’s processors and APUs were usually made by Globalfoundries, an independent semiconductor foundry created in March of 2009, after AMD spun off its chip fabrication business.

Despite the close partnership between the two companies all throughout 2011, AMD complained about the performance of Globalfoundries while the latter had some production issues with its leading fabrication technologies. These led AMD to revise its chip fabrication deal with Globalfoundries in April last year in order to pay only for the working chips produced.

AMD’s decision to start producing chips at IBM is expected to boost its ability to compete in terms of volume with Intel. This increase in manufacturing capacity should be a big help for AMD’s next-gen Trinity APUs, which target a wide range of market segments, from ultrathin notebooks to desktops.

According to AMD, these changes are expected to provide more compute performance than Llano, superior entertainment potential, longer battery-life as well as better graphics. Trinity APUs are scheduled to arrive during the middle of this year.

Most of the top PC makers have already entered the ultrabook bandwagon, using the latest Intel processors, quick boot technology as well as other newfangled features on their devices. While Intel has trademarked the word “ultrabook” it certainly doesn’t have the monopoly on ultraportable laptops.

However, chip maker, AMD, believes that computer makers would consider slapping in some of its latest chips to thin and light laptops in the coming year. In fact, they just showed a notebook computer prototype that measures 0.7 inches thick. It runs on a low voltage AMD Trinity multi-core processor, which will have a TDP of 25 Watts or less.

The particular model was produced by Taiwanese manufacturer Compal and will probably never actually make it to market. However, this just shows what ultrathin notebooks from AMD could look like.

The only difference is that AMD thinks that PC makers could sell notebooks like this for $500 and up, while ultrabooks might still sell for $900 or more.

Acer has just started selling its latest nettop based on AMD’s high-end Brazos APU for $329.99, or 251 EUR. The new Revo RL70 bears a strong resemblance to the rest of the company’s nettops, but this time it received a somewhat more refined design that won’t make it feel out of place in the leaving room, near your HDTV.

The Revo RL70 runs on AMD E-450 accelerated processing unit, which sports dual Bobcat x86 processing cores clocked at 1.65GHz. Its graphics capabilities, on the other hand, is driven by Radeon HD 6320, featuring some impressive multimedia capabilities. It also comes with a 500GB hard drive, together with 2GB of DDR3 system memory.

Despite its small size, the Acer nettop comes with a range of ports and connectors, including audio jacks, four rear USB 2.0 ports, two frontal USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as VGA and HDMI video outputs. A multi-format card reader, WiFi connectivity and an S/PDIF audio output is also included to the specs list.

If these specs are to good for home use, the E-450 powered Revo RL70 is now available on Amazon for $329.99 (251 EUR). The Acer Revo RL70 system also comes with a keyboard and mouse, so everything you need is included inside the box.
