Acer’s seems to be prepping up the new Aspire 1420p Tablet netbook for release to the U.S. While it was being displayed on a press event in China, the Acer folks in the U.S. have went ahead and published and official product page for the said machine on the Acer website.

So, were looking at an Aspire tablet PC with the following specs:

11.6-inch LED backlit multitouch screen with WXGA resolution

Intel Celeron CPU with integrated grpahics

up to 8GB of RAM

320 GB hDD

Wi-Fi 801.11 b/g/Draft N

Bluetooth

multi-card reader

webcam

optional 3G

Aside from the multitouch screen, what makes the Aspire 1420p stand out is its special convertible design which let you use it as a photo frame, portable cinema or a presentation tool. The tablet PC can also be folded up like a notepad for taking notes, reading ebooks or navigating maps. In addition, it also has a built-in accelerometer and a FineTip full-size keyboard.

If you’re looking to upgrade from XP or Vista on your netbook, or perhaps you already have, then here’s some great news for you. Some netbook makers have already updated the driver download pages to include Windows 7 drivers which should work better than Vista drivers you may be using instead. Most Asus netbooks now have drivers for Windows 7 from their support page.

Other companies have updated their support pages but, not all companies support many netbook models. There is support from Toshiba for the NB205, while Acer are providing Windows 7 drivers for the Aspire One 751 and AOP531h with AOD250 to follow. Dell are listing drivers for the Mini 10v and Mini 10 but not the Inspiron Mini 9 or 12. HP on the other hand have support for discontinued netbooks, such as the HP Mini 2140. They’ve also got support for the 110, 5101 and other models. Lenovo have also updated their support page to include manuals but, no drivers yet. This could change soon though.

Now that the Acer Aspire One D250 with its dual booting Win7/Android feature, is already out in the open, we’ve got two separate posts coming from Pocket-Lint and Register Hardware writers who got their hands-on the said netbook during its launch.

Interestingly both coverages noticed one major flaw with the machine – it’s inability to actually directly boot to Windows 7. Instead, the boot-up process takes you directly to the Android platform and to get Windows 7 running you need to do some manual procedures.

The Android installation on the Aspire One D250 is your simple desktop OS which could very well be an alternative to other system offerings such as Splashtop. It’s just a simple interface for quickly browsing the web. While the Android’s main menu do however give you all the apps and options that you can use.

One of the first reviews of the Acer Aspire One D250 has surfaced. The netbook dual boots with Android and Windows XP which is relatively easier. It’s noted that a twin power button would have been great but, none the less switching between operating systems is easy. A reboot dialogue allows users to switch between XP and Android. Shutting down was quick and loading into Android took around 20 seconds.

The netbook overall receives a verdict of disappointing and feels semi finished, most of which is attributed to Android. The Android Market has been removed from the OS along with the ability to block sideload software, making it a “closed OS”. On the other hand, Acer seem to have also reworked the OS so that it fits the larger screen on the D250, which is a 10 inch display. Windows XP however works as well as expected on the netbook.

The netbook’s name has apparently been changed to Acer Aspire 1410 but the specs remain the same. There’s a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, GMA 4500MHD graphics, 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 pixel widescreen display, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, built-in webcam, 5-in-1 card reader and a 6-cell battery that’s been rated at 6 hours per charge. The list price is $460.33 USD, which makes it sound like a pretty good deal, doesn’t it?

Acer and Asus’ rivalry continues and this time in a bigger scale. By bigger scale I mean, the LCD display. These two manufacturers have both released their 11-inch netbooks and are now competiting against each other in the market.

So we have the Acer Aspire One 751 and the Eee PC 1101HA pitted against each other. And the folks at Netbook Italia have observed some differences between these two netbooks.

Here are some of their observations:

color difference – the white models of the two netbooks were compared and Acer’s netbook is slightly darker than the Eee PC 1101HA, which as we all know is supposed to be pearly white

the Aspire One 751 is slightly thinner at 2.5cm than the supposedly ultra-thin seashell Eee PC 1101HA (3 cm)

6-cell battery for the Eee PC 1101HA and only 3-cell battery with no upgrade option for the Aspire One 751

the Eee PC 1101HA perferms better when overclocked

the Aspire One 751 is more modder-friendly due to small alloy door underneath that you can use to reach the hard disk and RAM in case you want to upgrade

when it comes to keyboard, both have full-sized ones but the Aspire One opted for the “chicklet-type” keyboard while the Eee PC 1101HA sports the more traditional-looking keyboard

Both netbooks are practically the same in specs and features. Check out more comparison photos here.

Let’s see, what’s the latest Eee PC Asus recently? 1005HA, 1008HA, 1004DN? How about Acer? – the Timeline perhaps? Well, quite frankly it has already gone a bit confusing for us netbook lovers – what with all these new models Eee PC and Aspire One. Thankfully, both Asus and Acer will not be releasing new models of their respective netbooks – for now.

According to Digitimes, both companies might be waiting for the release of Intel’s new Pine Trail-M platform which is scheduled sometime around 1st quarter of 2010.

So, what are these two companies going to do for the rest of the year? Focus on ultra-thin notebooks instead.
But still, we’ve got some new netbooks to watch out for, specifically the Eee PC T91, 101 as well as the Android-based netbook which was already announced for a second half release.

After that, I guess we will all have to wait for the Q2 of 2010 before we get to see more new netbooks coming our way. But this is only for Asus and Acer and does not cover other netbook manufacturers.

A post from the Asus Eee PC blog.

There Will Be No New Netbooks from Acer and Asus Until Next Year
