Active Media, known makers of solid state drives for notebooks and netbooks has recently announced a new line of SSDs geared specifically for Eee PC netbooks – the SabreTooth S3.   Specifically, these SSD units will be compatible with Eee PC S101, Eee PC 900, Eee PC 900A and Eee PC 901.

Specs of the SabreTooth S3 SSDs include read speeds of up to 95mbps while write speed is up to 70mbps. Available storage capacities range from 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

These SSDs should fit the Eee PC Mini PCIe card slot. The 32GB goes for $89.99 and 64GB for $159.99 at Amazon.com.

If you’re still in the hunt for that elusive highly affordable netbook, well you’re in luck as Newegg might have what you are looking for. How about this – an Eee PC 900 for $169.99?  And you won’t have to pay for shipping cost as well.

If you have forgotten already, the Eee PC 900 used to be one of Asus’ mighty netbook, before the likes of the Eee PC 1000HE and the Seashell variants came out.

Anyway, the Newegg deal offers the Eee PC 900 with the following specs:

Newegg Offers the Eee PC 900 for $170

The HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition is available in a 10 inch or 8.9 inch model, priced at $279.99 for the 8.9 inch and an additional $40 to upgrade to a 10 inch display. The standard HP Mini 1000 comes in at just under $300, priced at $298.97, along with the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 ($299) and the Asus Eee PC 900HA ($293.99). The upgraded 904HA is available for $15 more at $308.40 bringing with it a larger keyboard like you’d find on a 10 inch model. The Acer Aspire One with a 160GB hard drive teeters on the $300 mark with a 3 cell battery, but a 6 cell battery model will add an extra $30 to the price tag. Where as the 8GB SSD version with Linux will set you back $273.28. Interestingly, the XP model is cheaper at $239.

Other 9 inch netbooks noted in the list include the Dell Inspiron Mini 9n ($249), refurbished Eee PC 900s which sell for $180 and the Eee PC 901 ($279.99).

19 Sub $350 netbooks

Well, if you have been closely following this blog (I hope you do), you’d remember that two weeks ago, I got my Eee PC 1000H  thinking that the Eee PC 1000HE won’t be available in our region until the next couple of months. But a few days after I got my 1000H, I saw an online distributor offering the 1000HE already. To cut a long story short, I ended up getting the 1000HE as well.  I hope you’ve read my review and unboxing post of the 1000H.  And now, here’s my full review of the Eee PC 1000HE.

3 Major Differences between the Eee PC 1000H and 1000HE

As you may have probably read by now, Asus has changed the 1000H’s keyboard into the chicklet-style and much better keyboard of the Eee PC 1000HE. In fact, Asus said that it is now a 92% type full keyboard. And whether Asus’ claim is true or not, the fact still remains that the 1000HE’s keyboard is now more realistic and conducive for typing purposes. In addition, the right shift key has return to its proper place so those who got annoyed with the wrong placement of the key on the 1000H would be glad to know about this.

Unless you are living in the stone age era, or you are not interested with netbooks at all, you probably know by now that the Eee PC 1000HE has a longer battery life.  Its 8700-mAh lithium ion battery can max out up to around 7 hours of normal computing before the battery dies out on you. This may not be a deal breaker since there are other netbooks with longer battery life. But for the Eee PC family, this is certainly a step towards improvement. Especially as compared to the Eee PC 1000H.

And the last major difference is the fact that the Eee PC 1000HE performs faster than the 1000H thanks to a better Atom N280 processor. While booting up both the 1000H and 1000HE at the same time, you won’t really notice the difference. Boot up sequence of the 1000HE took around 36-37 seconds before it fully launch Windows XP.

Review of Eee PC 1000HE

Design, Look and Feel of the Eee PC 1000HE

I got the black Eee PC 1000HE so in terms of overall look and design it definitely looks a lot like a real notebook as compared to my previous Eee PC 701.  The additional inches on the screen is definitely a bigger step towards making the Eee PC more like a regular machine already.  In fact, this is the big difference between the 10-inch sized Eee PC and the smaller sizes.  The first time you see and use the Eee PC 700 or 900 series, you’d get the feeling that you are actually using a toy rather than a full computing machine.

The back part of the Eee PC 1000HE sports a glossy classic finish. While some may find this a cool feature, some may also find it quite annoying especially since this is a magnet for fingerprints. So, if annoys you, you might want to find some transparent skin solution that you can stick on the back part of your 1000HE’s bezel.

Multimedia Features of the Eee PC 1000HE

The Eee PC 1000HE sports a matte-display with a standard 1024×600 pixel resolution. It features a LED-backlit panel which displays videos and graphics well. Not really a deal breaker but certainly an improvement of previous Eee PC models.

Aside from the 1024×600 resolution you can also shift from other options including a compressed 1024×768 and 800×600. It really depends on your preference on what screen resolution you are comfortable working with. You can easily change the resolution by pressing one of the silver buttons located at the upper part of the keyboard.

For audio, the Eee PC 1000HE is also a big improvement from other Eee PC models.  The 1000HE’s speakers can deliver crisp and nice sounds even at full volume.

The Eee PC 1000HE also has a 1.3 mp webcam but it’s not really something that we can all brag about. But in netbook standards this is of course the best that the Eee PC 1000HE can offer right now.

Standard Ports, Connectivity Features of the Eee PC 100HE

Connectivity is one aspect which the Eee PC 1000HE really shines. It offers you several ways to connect to other devices as well as to the Internet. The Wi-Fi connectivity works pretty well and you can immediately hook up to the Internet the moment you fire up your browser.

The Eee PC 1000HE also has Bluetooth so you can easily pair it up with another Bluetooth-enabled device. You can also hook it up to your mobile phone’s modem for instant mobile connectivity. If you don’t like using Bluetooth, you can connect your mobile phone’s USB cable instead. The Eee PC 1000HE has 3 USB ports which you can use for this purpose.

Other standard ports of the Eee PC 1000HE include VGA port, Kensington Lock, Ethernet, headphone and microphone jack.

For additional storage, you can also use a standard SDHC memory card.

Verdict: The 1000HE is the best Eee PC So Far

Having used the Eee PC 701 for a year, a brief stint with the Eee PC 900 and of course with the 1000H, I could safely say that the Eee PC 1000HE beats all other Eee PC models in terms of design, functionality and overall performance. I know there will soon be other better featured Eee PC scheduled to be release in the future. But most of them are stepping into advanced features which are already a gradual departure to standard netbook features.

The Eee PC 1000HE is a right step into what a standard netbook should be. Not too big, not too heavy and not too powerful. If you extend its features further and put more add-ins, you might as well categorize it as a standard notebook.

For those who are still thinking whether to buy this netbook or not anymore, if you take my word seriously, you won’t regret buying the Eee PC 1000HE.  For its price range, you will certainly get your money’s worth.

Asus Eee PC 1000HE: Review of the Eee PC 1000HE

Finally, what eveyone has been waiting for a long time now, a sub $200 netbook, courtesy of  Woot online store. Woot, which is actually a partnership between Woot and Yahoo is offering the Eee PC 900 for $180 + $5 shipping. This simply means that we now have a netbook at sub-$200 price mark.

There is a catch though – this offer is good for today only. So you now have from now until 12 midnight tonight to grab this offer from Woot.

Although the Eee PC may not be the most powerful and power-packed netbook today, but still, getting it a price lower than $200 is definitely something to get us all excited.

If you’re thinking of getting the Eee PC 900 from Woot, here’s a review of its specs and features:

$200 Netbook Comes to Reality, One Day Only at Woot

None other than Benson Lin of Asustek Asia Pacific Division said that since the 10-inch netbooks are now the standard in the market today it is but the right time to start phasing out their 8.9-inch Eee PCs.

Asus is alloting 95% of their 2009 netbook shipments for the 10-inch Eee PC models, while the remaining 5% will be allocated to the 7-inch models.

Is this a right market strategy? Do consumers really prefer the 10-inch Eee PCs than the 8.9-inch models?

Asus to Say Goodbye to 8.9-inch Eee PCs

In a partnership that aims to raise as much as $250,000 for breast cancer research and education, Dell have joined up with breast cancer charity ‘Susan G. Komen for the Cure’ and intend to raise funds by donating $5 for every netbook and laptop they sell in their newly released “Promise Pink” variation.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 12 series of netbooks will both recieve the Promise Pink color variation along with models from the Studio, Inspiron and Latitude laptop ranges and the XPS M1330 and M1530 models, according to a press release from Dell. The Promise Pink line up is available now from the Dell website.

Dell Mini Inspiron Raising Funds for Breast Cancer

From the survey, a huge 79% said that they viewed netbooks as an accompaniment to laptops or desktops. While only 11% said they would use a netbook as their primary device.

Shane from Ars Technica seems to agree with the results from the survey as he himself uses a desktop primarily. While his MSI Wind is used as his secondary device, it is noted that it has however, replaced his laptop. Personally, I would be amongst those 11% of consumers that use their netbook as their primary device – an MSI Wind clone replaced my laptop and is used more than my desktop computer, which is used for the only thing traditional netbooks can’t do – read or burn disks.
