JkOnTheRun received a tip from Pereira about a netbook retailing at under $300 and it isn’t the touchscreen Asus Eee PC, due to come out next year, either.

The model on offer is the Asus Eee PC 900A which is set to retail for $299 at Best Buy stores. That’s a great reduction off the original launch price of $465 in August.

However, with just a 4GB SSD, it could be worth waiting to see if the Eee PC 701SDX will come fitted with a 4GB or 8GB for the same $300 price tag before making a purchase. If you can’t wait for news on the 701SDX though and you’re looking for a cheap netbook, it seems most stores have them in stock, for now.

The netbook that created netbooks and which spawned a huge market for netbooks worldwide - the Asus Eee PC, is one year old today.

October 16th 2007 saw the arrival of the first Eee PC and since then the brand has soared in sales and become the ‘role model’ for a plethora of netbooks from different manufacturers and a plethora of different models of the Eee PC from ASUS too.

The Eee PC is only a year old but it is still the oldest netbook on the block and with the number of different models of Eee PC that ASUS are producing, there is still a lot of life in the old/young netbook yet!

Happy Birthday Eee PC!!

Thanks to a press release posted by jkontherun, we know that Super Talent are producing three mini PCIe SSD’s which will be made specifically for the hugely popular ASUS Eee PC, expected in the next month or so.

Three drive sizes, a 16GB, a 32GB and a 64GB will be available and will have a maximum 40MB/sec read speed and a maximum 15MB/sec write speed.  They will cost $53, $79 and $149 respectively, which seems a reasonable price for the size of the drives.

If you haven’t joined the netbook bandwagon yet, then you’re in luck or should we say, would be in luck? That is if the market trend in Taiwan spills over internationally, as Digitimes is reporting that netbook vendors are starting to clear their inventory by reducing the prices of their netbooks. These vendors are in rush to free up their netbooks before the year ends.

Except for MSI which could not reduce the price of its Wind netbook, Asus, Acer and HP have all brought down the prices of their netbooks.

Asustek Taiwan has already reduced the price of their oldest Eee PC, the 701 to around $249. It is also planning to reduce the prices of the Eee PC 1000 Linux version to around $530 from $624 and the Eee PC 1000H will get a price reduction of around $31. The Eee PC 901 Linux version will also get a price reduction from around $530 to around $468.

Similarly, Acer has also brought down the price of the Aspire One from around $524 to around $483. HP for its part has reduced the price of its 2133 Mini-Note Linux version from $558 to around $496

Digitimes also reported that more netbook price cut reduction will happen before the year ends.

So, you just might want to hold off your plan of buying a netbook now and wait till this market trend reaches the international market too.

Good news for netbook users with the need for a larger sized storage facility - Toshiba will soon be launching a range of solid state drives that can offer you between 8GB and 32GB of storage and read/write speeds of 80MB/sec and 50MB/sec respectively. There will also be a 2.5 inch notebook version with 256GB of storage and read/write speeds of 120MB/sec and 70MB/sec.

Exact release dates and pricing details are unknown but, expect a release towards the end of the year and more information as it comes in.

Found this 10400mAh Replacement Battery Pack for Asus Eee PC listed at Deal Extreme. The product page says it works with the Eee PC 7, 8 and 9 series and promises supper long runtime hours per charge. Unfortunately it doesn’t say how many hours one battery charge would last. But if a 6-cell battery pack could max out up to 7 hours of use, then we could assume that this 10-cell battery pack could max out up to around 12 hours or more?

The battery pack costs $49.90 with free shipping worldwide. Sounds to good to be true? That’s what some of the visitors say. But Deal Extreme seems to be a pretty decent online store though. So, I guess we need to wait for users who would actually buy the battery pack to find out if the deal is true.

I would really love to get one of those battery pack for my Eee PC 701. Anyone who would be brave enough to order, we will appreciate getting your feedback.

Asus just announced that the Eee PC models will soon have 3.75G (HSUPA) connectivity. Starting off with the Eee PC 901, the 3.75G will enable high-speed Internet access anytime, anywhere. This practically means that users can now have access to the Internet even if there are no Wi-Fi hotspots since, connection will be enabled through mobile broadband network.

Mobile broadband network can give as much as 7.2 Mbps downlink and 2 Mbps uplink speeds. And users don’t have to worry about draining their battery life as well, since the Eee PC 901 is capable of providing 7.5 hours of good use. But of course, this will still depend on the users location, if HSUPA is already available.

The Eee PC 901 with 3.75G will be available sometime in October - onwards and will have the following specs:

  • Windows XP OS
  • 8.9-inch display
  • Intel ATOM CPU
  • WLAN, Bluetooth
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB SSD
  • 20GB Free online storage
  • 6 cell battery
