If you’re an avid follower of Toshiba, then you should know that the company has already launched its first netbook running on an Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail processor earlier this year. But if you’re daily checking if this tiny Toshiba NB510 notebook would passed in the FCC website to be followed by its US release, then you’re probably waiting in vain.

Perhaps you would be surprised knowing that a Toshiba executive has already gave a confirmation regarding the plans of Toshiba America for not offering any new netbooks in the US. As an alternative, the company rather focusing on the production of ultraboks like the Toshiba Portege Z830 which provides almost the same thin and light features but with greater performance than of a usual netbook.

Toshiba isn’t only the company that’s pulled out netbooks in the PCs market recently. Also Lenovo and Dell are finally on the similar game, while Sony and Samsung are still free launching their new built models in the US this year.

However, the ultrabooks of Toshiba would cost a lot more staring at $800 compared with the netbooks which usually offer for $300.

The fact that there are newly released ultrabooks and hybrid devices to run the mobile PC market today, still, smaller and lighter laptops called netbooks are nonetheless gaining a hit part out of this growing electronic industry.

Acer has created once again some kicks and tricks for the rising laptop market. With its newly unveiled Aspire One 725 netbook, consumers can actually feel the need for a different light browsing alternative.

The Aspire One 725 is an 11.6 incher netbook boasting a 1366 × 768p display resolution. What’s more exciting is that it features AMD’s low-power Fusion chipset through the dual-core C-60 processor. Also, this unit is equipped with AMD Radeon HD 6290 GPU together with up to 4 GB of RAM and a 320/500 GB hard drive.

Acer opted to include brightness of up to 200-nits with its CineCrystal display; aiming to transform a quite better device than your typical netbook. The Aspire One 725 also features Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI port and will have support for the 850/900/1900/2100 MHz 3G bands for a max speed of 7.2 Mbit/s. It is one inch thick and comes with a 4-cell battery.

However, for now, Acer didn’t give even some hints about its pricing and releasing info.

Users who own a Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 netbook can now transform the LCD display of their device into a Pixel Qi 3Qi hybrid display. Using a Pixel Qi DIY kit from MAKE magazine’s Makershed, this modification gives users the chance to select among three screen modes: a black and white mode, a high resolution full color mode, and an e-paper mode for glare-free reading with ample ambient light.

This hybrid type of screen allows users to save from 0.5 to 2 W of power and prolong the battery life of the device which uses it. Originally, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 netbook comes with a 10.1-inch WSVGA LED-backlit display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

On the front, the Pixel Qi screen is matte as compared to the glossy Lenovo display. On the rear side, it comes with an inverter that works with the Lenovo S10-2. The original Lenovo display may be opened through an X-Acto knife and a screwdriver.

Users are warned, however, that the replacement is generally advisable only for experienced technicians, as it requires some level of difficulty especially with the opening of the device. It will likely also void warranties on the gadget.

It takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes to install the Pixel Qi 3Qi screen.

Ever heard of the idiomatic expression “hitting two birds with one stone”? Then this might be the best way to describe Novero’s newest netbook called the Solana. It is a netbook which you can twist around 180 degrees and then close it with the screen facing outward so it could function like a tablet.

Since the model already passed through FCC, then this will surely be available in the US in the coming months. The processor that keeps this device powered is called the Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail. The model has a 9.7-inch panel size with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution display.

One of its distinct features is that it can run both on Windows and Android firmwares. You just have to choose and access your choice of OS by double clicking a designated icon on the desktop.

Its specs include 2 GB of RAM plus 128 GB internal storage. The integrated camera is 3 MP and connectivity is possible through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or HSPA + mobile broadband. Added features comprised of two USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI output as well.

The unit will cost $799 upon its US release.

With tablets and smartphones dominating the electronic world today, Intel is rumored to be partnering with hardware makers to come up with a new generation netbooks. According to Fudzilla, the new variety of netbooks will have screens ranging from 7 to 12.1 inches. It will also feature Windows 7, Windows 8, Tizen Linux or even Google Chrome OS. Some netbooks could have premium features such as Blu-ray 2.0 support, WiDi (wireless display) technology, and fanless designs. Fudzilla further see some ultrabook-like features including rapid start and “Smart Connect” functionality which lets the computer keep email, social networks, and other data up to date even when the PC is sleeping. And finally, to make the netbooks more appealing, prices will be between $199 and $399.

There are no other reports validating this rumor yet. But if this realizes, this will sure change the fate of netbooks as a lot of portable PC users note that they will take any device with keyboard any day over tablets.

The Android x86 project has enabled Android Ice Cream Sandwich to run on the Asus Eee PC X101 netbook. The build, however, is not official, and neither Google nor Asus had commissioned the Android x86 project to test if it could work. Still, the bottom line is that it does, which could prompt others to run a similar build on non-tablet devices.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which is generally for tablet use, runs quite slowly on the netbook, however. The mouse and the touchpad substitute for touch screen gestures such as touching or dragging. Wi-Fi is also working well on the build as well as input devices such the Volume and Escape buttons.

There had also been adjustments made in the interface for users to navigate through the home screen with ease using the mouse and touchpad. All of these is good news for users of the Asus Eee PC X101 netbook, who might experience less issues with Ice Cream Sandwich features than those using other devices, who report freezing or crashing problems.

Nonetheless, it is still advisable for users to backup their content before attempting to download ICS for their netbooks as there will be no official support in case something goes wrong.

To date, the OS has only been tested on the Asus Eee PC X101 netbook, although it is likely that the build could also work on similar devices.
