Getac Technology and Bin Chuan Enterprise are set to start shipping newly-manufactured laptop casings made of a composite of fiberglass, metal and plastic.

The Taiwan-based supply chain companies have produced these cases for Ultrabooks that will be released in the second quarter of this year.

This development follows Intel’s suggestion to find other durable materials for Ultrabook laptop bodies other than Unibody’s aluminum alloy casings. Metal alloy currently strains the budget of manufacturers because of its relative high price.

Moreover, Apple uses a lot of the production capacity of metal alloy cases for their laptops starting in 2008 when they first used these cases for the MacBook.

Getac Technology is creating the composite cases through rapid heat cycle molding RHCM. The company has a monthly capacity of 4.5 million fiberglass-metal-plastic cases.

They also have yield rates greater than 90%. While the Bin Chuan Enterprise is hiking its production capacity of the cases to 1.8 million.

The new cases by Getac Technology and Bin Chuan Enterprise lower the selling price of Ultrabooks by around $50 to 100 as compared to models with Unibody aluminum alloy cases.

Companies such as Asustek Computers, Lenovo, Hewlett Packard and Acer are all expected to release models with such new cases at around $699-799.

HP wants to focus their future marketing strategy on security. The company believes that it would help them gain more consumers if they stress their campaign on a certain quality that their products posses.

Security is an issue of tremendous importance for HP, especially in the face of widespread hacking and other forms of cyber threats. Other factors that necessitate a good security strategy include the changing business models and the demographics of the workforce, the rise of mobile computing, the growing pervasiveness of cloud computing, and the increase of dependence on social media.

Currently, there are security solutions available such as AES encryption for flash drives, hard disk drives and solid state drives. The problem is that these are a bit pricey and are often insufficient against the various threats.

HP is planning to offer strong security solutions for products targeted at individual consumers, medium-scale businesses and big enterprises.

The security solutions involves a layered system of defense against the various risks. Among others, this includes identity management, access management, information security management, endpoint security, application security, and network management.

HP has developed this system alongside their partners in technology development and services. Through this, they have created not only viable solutions, but also cost-effective ones.

For some users, an inexpensive laptop is enough. With its low-end processor, small hard disk storage capacity, as well as run of the mill graphics, a cheap laptop often answers the needs of users who rarely work on said devices.

However for users who perform heavy-duty work and thus want to make the most out of their notebooks, a more powerful laptop such as the HP Pavilion g6-1c58dx is suitable.

So, it is good news that some retailers like the Apple warehouse MacMall is currently selling the device for the price only $384.99.

The HP Pavilion g6-1c58dx sold by MacMall offers a quad-core AMD A6-3400M processor. This is partnered with an AMD Radeon HD 6520G discrete-class graphics. The 500GB hard drive with 5400 rpm also works with 4GB DDR3 SDRAM.

This notebook is also equipped with a 15.6-inch LED-backlit LCD screen wth widescreen HD display. Among its other add-ons are a multiformat DVDRW/CD-RW drive, 3 USB 2.0 ports, webcam, microphone and a media reader for various formats. There are also built-in high-speed wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n or built-in 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN for connectivity.

This is a good deal considering that Onsale has a Pavilion for the same price that only has a dual-core AMD processor.

Intel’s Cedar Trail platform may not have the APUs like that of AMD E-series , but this hasn’t stopped HP from using it in order to refresh their Mini 110 and Mini 210 netbook computers. Intel’s Cedar Tail platform is made up of the Cedarview processors and the NM10 chipset, with the latter alsobeing used by for the Pine Trail netbook and nettop platform.

The CPU on Cedar Trail are built using the 32nm fabrication process and features a unified architecture that packs the processing cores, memory controller (apparently connected to the CPU via an FSB bus) as well as the GPU on the same die. The latter is actually based on a PowerVR design and features hardware decoding capabilities for a wide number of HD formats, such as MPEG2, VC1, AVC, H.264 and Blu-ray 2.0.

In the Mini 110 and 210, customers can choose between the 1.6GHz Atom N2600 and 1.86GHz N2800 processors which can be supported by either 1GB or 2GB of RAM. Netbooks can pack hard drives reaching up to 500GB, while the rest of the specs list includes 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and 100Mbps LAN connectivity, VGA webcam, a built-in media card reader and a 6-cell battery.

The keyboard is spill-resistant and comes with a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen that uses a 1024×600 resolution in the Mini 110 and 1368×768 in the 210.

The two systems will start at 279 and 309 EUR, which translates into about $367 to $407 US.

The HP TouchPad tablet has made its comeback on Woot again at a good price . Available for $219.99, plus $5 for shipping, buyers will be getting refurb units. However, the fact that HP had directly offered the 32GB model for $149.99 in the past may not suit the taste of some consumers.

The 32GB TouchPad features WiFi capability, so that users may get the benefit of WiFi Internet. The screen is a 9.7-inch capacitive LCD and the tablet rocks webOS 3.0 and has Bluetooth 2.1. With the TouchPad being discontinued, I don’t know how many folks will be interested. You can run Android on the tablet if you are the hacking sort.

Though it’s a refurb unit, the tablet comes with a 90-day warranty from HP. So, if the machine malfunctions within the first three months, users can still have the device fixed at no extra cost.

Finally, the refurbished HP TouchPad may be offered at a higher price, but users may find this a great deal if they want the TouchPad.

The original price is $799. This price reduction follows the discontinuance of the production of the HP Slate 500.

Several changes have been made with the new HP Slate 2. For example, the older version had a slower processor, Intel Atom Z540. Its design was likewise less sleek than the current model. In almost all other aspects however, the two are similar.

The HP Slate 2 sports a 1 GHz Intel Atom Z670 processor and an Intel System Controller Hub (SCH) SM35 chipset. It has a maximum memory of 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and is equipped with a 64 GB Solid State Drive internal drive. It also has Broadcom Crystal HD video for 1080p video playback. Its screen is an 8.9″ diagonal WSVGA touchscreen.

Other features include connectivity via Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth 4.0 plus HS combo. There is also VGA webcam, a rear camera, and an external USB 2.0 CD/DVD R/RW optical drive. Several of pre-installed apps are HP Slate Camera, Evernote, Swype Virtual Keyboard as well as Support Assistant.

The $499 HP Slate 2 is available from B&H.

Still, there are people that loves to have full computing experience in a small and inexpensive package. Ultrabooks are out of the equation because of its steep price.

HP has added the Mini 1104 to the netbook market. Its specs won’t wow everyone, as well as its design. It’s a utilitarian device because aimed at business and studying users.

The Mini 1104 runs on a dual-core, Intel 1.6GHz Atom N2600 processor and GMA 3600 GPU. It also has 2GB of RAM and 320 GB of 5400 RPM HDD. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1024×600. For connectivity and peripherals, the Mini 1104 has 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and VGA out. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also supported. HSPA+ and GPS are optional. This netbook can be purchased with Windows 7 or FreeDOS installed.

The HP Mini 1104 is a decent but uninspiring alternative to a mobile-OS tablet for users. But it’s cheap at only $399.
