Woot! NVIDIA is Giving Away 12 HP Mini 311 with Blu-ray Player

Among the many netbooks that debut with Windows 7 OS at Amazon, it was surprising that many chose to purchase the HP Mini 110. The HP Mini 110 currently leads the hordes of Windows 7 netbooks up for grabs at Amazon, followed by three Eee PC 1005 netbooks with one of them running Win7.

Whatever made the HP Mini 110  tops the Amazon charts, were really don’t know. But in case you’re interested to follow others here’s what you’re going to get aside from a Windows 7 running OS from the HP Mini 311:

Obviously the reason why Verizon added these netbooks is to join the Windows 7 netbook craze that is just starting to heat up right now. Although only the HP Mini 311 has the Windows 7 installed, the HP Mini 110 could still be a good choice.

Verizon Offers the HP Mini 311 with Windows 7

If you’re looking to upgrade from XP or Vista on your netbook, or perhaps you already have, then here’s some great news for you. Some netbook makers have already updated the driver download pages to include Windows 7 drivers which should work better than Vista drivers you may be using instead. Most Asus netbooks now have drivers for Windows 7 from their support page.

Other companies have updated their support pages but, not all companies support many netbook models. There is support from Toshiba for the NB205, while Acer are providing Windows 7 drivers for the Aspire One 751 and AOP531h with AOD250 to follow. Dell are listing drivers for the Mini 10v and Mini 10 but not the Inspiron Mini 9 or 12. HP on the other hand have support for discontinued netbooks, such as the HP Mini 2140. They’ve also got support for the 110, 5101 and other models. Lenovo have also updated their support page to include manuals but, no drivers yet. This could change soon though.

Windows 7 drivers added for netbooks

With many netbooks already able to load into OS X it comes as no surprise that the netbook/CULV device from HP can also run OS X. One hacker over at the Insanely Mac forums, has successfully loaded into the Apple operating system on their HP Mini 311. Both the high resolution of the device (1366 x 768) and graphics (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M) are supported in OS X along with the card reader, Ethernet, webcam and bluetooth. Unfortunately WiFi and sound don’t work at the moment. Neither does the sleep/resume function but, this has been a case with many Hackintosh netbooks.

HP Mini 311 gets the Hackintosh treatment

Somewhere in China appeares what seems to be an HP Mini 5101 netbook. But if you take a closer look, you’d immediately noticed that this particular netbook is actually different from the HP 5101. While the HP Mini 5101 only has a 10.1 inch display, this 5101 clone however got 11.6 inches of display goodness.

The said netbook was manufactured by a Chinese PC maker Phecda and includes not as good as the real HP 5101 specs such as an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB of HDD, WiFi, 1.3MP webcam, 2450mAh battery and weighs 1.21kg.

If you are curious to know, the HP Mini 5101, the real one has Atom N280, 2MP webcam, a 7200RM HD and a higher capacity battery.

Price of this HP 5101 clone is around $300 US dollar equivalent in Shenzhen China. It is estimated to be available come November.

HP Mini 5101 Got Cloned in China

Laptop Mag listened to their readers and have videos of the netbook playing both World of Warcraft and Spore. Overall they were pleased with the results. They even made use of the 1080p HD Video out and connected it up to a Samsung HD TV and the results are very impressive. While doing their tests, they’ve also played the HD trailer of “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” back, which apart from some motion blur, had smooth playback. MyHPMini.com stumbled upon this vital documents relating to the upgrade features for the upcoming HP Mini 311. And from the looks of it, HP seems to be really prepping up the HP Mini 311 to become a powerful machine with excellent video handling capability.

HP Mini 311 Upgrade Features Show Up

One hacker has already added a Broadcom HD video accelerator to the Intel Atom powered Samsung NC10 which worked well. Another hacker has tried the same hack on a VIA C7-M powered netbook and come out with good results. Chris over at HP Mini Note PC has modded his HP Mini 2133 with a Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Media Accelerator card. With it installed he’s been able to play 720 and 1080p videos on his netbook including Blu-Ray video. The Blu-Ray videos needed to be paused for a few seconds first though so the video could buffer.

Unfortunately Chris hasn’t provided a guide on how you can mod your own Mini 2133 but, you can see how successful his project was in the videos after the jump.
