Acer has just started selling its latest nettop based on AMD’s high-end Brazos APU for $329.99, or 251 EUR. The new Revo RL70 bears a strong resemblance to the rest of the company’s nettops, but this time it received a somewhat more refined design that won’t make it feel out of place in the leaving room, near your HDTV.

The Revo RL70 runs on AMD E-450 accelerated processing unit, which sports dual Bobcat x86 processing cores clocked at 1.65GHz. Its graphics capabilities, on the other hand, is driven by Radeon HD 6320, featuring some impressive multimedia capabilities. It also comes with a 500GB hard drive, together with 2GB of DDR3 system memory.

Despite its small size, the Acer nettop comes with a range of ports and connectors, including audio jacks, four rear USB 2.0 ports, two frontal USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as VGA and HDMI video outputs. A multi-format card reader, WiFi connectivity and an S/PDIF audio output is also included to the specs list.

If these specs are to good for home use, the E-450 powered Revo RL70 is now available on Amazon for $329.99 (251 EUR). The Acer Revo RL70 system also comes with a keyboard and mouse, so everything you need is included inside the box.

After its introduction of the Edge HD nettop six months ago, Sapphire has unveiled a new version of the mini-PC that runs on a more powerful AMD accelerated processing unit. The present EDGE HD2 nettop is operated by a dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor which runs at 1.8GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and Nvidia second-generation ION graphics.

The new Edge HD model was presented at the CES fair last week and it carries pretty much the same chassis as its Intel counterpart, only this time it is reported to draw its power from an E-450 APU, which is the fastest Brazos chip available so far. It also sports dual Bobcat x86 processing cores clocked at 1.65GHz as well as Radeon HD 6320 integrated graphics with impressive multimedia capabilities. The said processor is paired with 4GB of DDR3 system memory and a 320GB hard disk drive.

For the connectivity, the system features two USB 2.0 ports, an mic and audio jacks, an Ethernet port, VGA and HDMI video outputs as well as USB 3.0 ports. Built-in WiFi is also included, while the power consumption of the Sapphire nettop is estimated at a low 30 Watts.

The E-450 powered Edge HD model is expected be available in February, this year with a base price of $300.

With Intel’s launch of the Atom Cedar Trail platform, many hardware manufacturers, such as ASUS, became inspired in making computers based on these chips. This includes the Eee Box EB1031 nettop.

Unlike its predecessors, Asus’ latest nettop has gained a matte case that does a far better job at keeping fingerprints away, while sporting a thinner profile. Despite its small size, the Eee Box EB1031 comes with a wide variety of ports and connectors including audio jacks, four frontal USB 2.0 ports, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as VGA and HDMI video outputs.

Under the hood is Intel’s recently released Atom D2800 processor that is based on the Cedarviewdesign. It features two processing cores with Hyper-Threading support, for a total of four computing threads, packs 1MB of Level 2 cache memory and comes clocked at 2.13GHz. This chip also sports an integrated 1066MHz memory controller as well as a 640MHz on-die GMA 3650 GPU based on a PowerVR core.

The rest of the system includes 4GB of DDR3 memory, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a multi-format card reader, as well as a 500GB hard drive (but can take any other 2.5-inch drive, HDD, SSD, or hybrid).

The Asus Eee Box EB1031 will be available in March, this year, while pricing hasn’t been discussed.

Samsung is now promoting their upcoming Chromebox. It’s a tuny desktop computer designed to run Chrome OS–a web based operating system based on Google Chrome.

The nettop measures 7.6″ x 7.6″ x 1.3″ and has a rear panel that’s includes lots of connectivities like USB ports as well as Ethernet and video ports. The Chromebox will start shipping in the second quarter of 2012 for $399.

This kind of computer is bes suited in education, business, public kiosk and other areas where several users need to use the same computer. The Chrome OS is a cloud-based, web-based app operating system.

The Chromebox is armed with a very fast SSD so that users can boot the computer right away. Samsung estimates that Chromebox would power up in about 10 seconds.

Samsung is also updating their Series 5 Chromebook.

The new model is thinner than the original. It has design that reminds a lot of people with the Asus Eee PC Flare netbooks with its palm rest raised well above the keyboard.

However, the new Chromebooks are now upgraded to carry a dual core Celeron chip.

Samsung will begin selling this new Chromebook starting at $400 soon.

Take or leave it, there’s no doubt that tablets don’t have the capacity to handle the same thoroughness (including similar efficiency levels) compared to a complete laptop, and to stress on that, Intel’s new Ultrabook is using that very position to endorse the Ultrabook type as a whole. Since we’re just left with a few days from witnessing what’s apt to be a deluge of such staff at CES, The new Ultrabook portal (with linked “Ultra Excited For Ultrabooks” sample paper) is leading the masses for what to look forward to.

Sure, you can’t say something here is truly revolutionary, per se; however it’s indeed the first time that we’ve witnessed such a huge company assuming a significant swing at a product segment that has wedged flames for innumerable reasons. The year 2012 is pacing up to be the year of the low-priced tablet; nevertheless if Intel has its way, you’ll be kicking off the excitement and going for a fully-fledged computing machine instead.

According to a report, Acer Chairman JT Wang alleged that Microsoft software could soon effectively take on Apple. Perhaps the only challenge that persists at the moment for Microsoft’s Windows is the growth of Apple’s iOS on tablets (iPad), and smartphones (iPhone) – according to an editorial in Taipei-based Digitimes, which published Wang’s comments on Monday.

Citing Wang’s comments, Microsoft’s Windows “hasn’t had any achievements within these two markets that can help it gain share,” citing a decline in Netbook sales hence resulting in only “slim” growth in the conventional laptop market. Although the publisher didn’t detail on Wang’s point, we assume Wang was speaking about market intrusion by the iPad, for instance, on the Netbook as well as low-end laptop market.

Although, recent reports from Gartner indicate only meek growth in PC sales in 2011; the Acer Group was placed in the 4th position in world rankings in terms of PC sales in the third quarter, according to IDC.

According to Wang, Apple’s “notebook products are only minor drivers” for growth and pale citing to the exciting escalation seen in its iPads and iPhones. However, Windows 8 could change this. In a few coming years, Wang sees a rebirth of the Microsoft camp behind Windows 8 as Microsoft reacts more efficiently to “consumer demands,” according to the report. Expect to see Windows 8 by 2013.

The Windows 8 is anticipated to run on wider range of devices, including, smartphones, tablets, Ultrabook clamshell laptops (latter rivaling Apple’s MacBook Air) and tablet-laptop hybrids.
