You’ll notice that every year at CES, tech-surveillance groups participate in a sort of stylespotting — an attempt to spot 0ne or two huge themes of the show that could steal or characterize the year in technology. And last year, the few ones that were easy to spot (was, 3D TV and tablets), while other occasions it entailed a bit of presumption. But this year among the most oft-cited styles is the “ultrabook.” Citing from the companies’ announcements at CES, and the coverage they got, one would think that’s a fresh sort of gadget or a completely new kind of laptop. But, honestly, these are just thin, slick laptops.

Perhaps Ultrabooks, a name entirely-owned and fabricated by Intel, and the excitement that’s seen for them at the show is just a start. Intel is allegedly planning its major advertising thrust in 8 years to campaign for Ultrabooks, and it’s obviously by now done a decent job of making sure hardware manufacturers are on board the bandwagon. Even though Ultrabooks did receive a little less publicity at the time, they essentially debuted in May of 2012 during Taiwan’s Computex trade show, where Intel pointed out the devices as PCs that “get hitched on the performance and features of today’s laptops with tablet-like characteristics and bring an extremely responsive and reliable experience, in a slick, light and stylish design.” According to ASUS Chairman, Jonney Shih, “Ultrabooks are here to change the way individuals interact with their computers.”

It’s great to see smaller, thinner laptops that are just as capable as their bigger counterparts, and that’s just the way laptops have evolved over the years. The obvious case is the MacBook Air – that technically can’t be called an Ultrabook, albeit it is questionably the major rival to all of the new machines introduced at CES.

Another similarity that frequently comes up is the netbook – a name that has somehow survived to exist close to the laptop, although netbooks are useful because they define what they are. A netbook often is not a laptop substitute for most users. It’s smaller and usually cheaper compared to a proper laptop, except that comes with a few real trades-offs. In fact, calling netbooks laptops is doing a disservice to consumers.

So what’s all the hype behind Ultrabooks? Really, there’s no any reason behind it, but a number of factors would have contributed to this hype. Kit Eaton only just explored several potentials in a fraction for Fast Company and not only the immediate threat from Apple, but the increasing availability of ARM-based devices – shortly to embrace Windows 8-based tablets. Besides, tablets as a whole seem to be one of the factors driving the Ultrabook excitement. They are a justifiably “fresh staff,” and are driving attention away from the old staff.

There’s still some potential for more real innovation in the gap among tablets and laptops, though. At the moment, you can get a slate that docks with a keyboard, yet it doesn’t substitute a laptop, and a laptop that switches into a tablet, yet it won’t replace a tablet. Windows 8 allows such devices (for example: pictured above, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga is quite near but not yet), and it appears Apple is also moving in a related direction too, considering the thinning gap between iOS and OS X. We’re yet to receive some new hype on those devices, perhaps freshly branded.

Most surveillance systems these days are fixed — if you want to get surveillance in every room it would force you to install more units around. As a substitute to this hindrance is the Oculus Telepresence unit that simply assembles your webcam-outfitted netbook for patrol duty.

Setting it up is very easy — users would just need to place their 11-inch netbook on an adjustable stand and have the open-source control software installed on a different PC. The software is compatible with Windows (7, XP, Vista,) operating systems, Android and iOS. Then the Arduino micro-controller lets the netbook’s webcam periscope to slant, well you may not be in a position to do much to stop those intruders once they get into your staff, but you’ll be able to see that roommate who always goes into your staff.

According to a report, Acer Chairman JT Wang alleged that Microsoft software could soon effectively take on Apple. Perhaps the only challenge that persists at the moment for Microsoft’s Windows is the growth of Apple’s iOS on tablets (iPad), and smartphones (iPhone) – according to an editorial in Taipei-based Digitimes, which published Wang’s comments on Monday.

Citing Wang’s comments, Microsoft’s Windows “hasn’t had any achievements within these two markets that can help it gain share,” citing a decline in Netbook sales hence resulting in only “slim” growth in the conventional laptop market. Although the publisher didn’t detail on Wang’s point, we assume Wang was speaking about market intrusion by the iPad, for instance, on the Netbook as well as low-end laptop market.

Although, recent reports from Gartner indicate only meek growth in PC sales in 2011; the Acer Group was placed in the 4th position in world rankings in terms of PC sales in the third quarter, according to IDC.

According to Wang, Apple’s “notebook products are only minor drivers” for growth and pale citing to the exciting escalation seen in its iPads and iPhones. However, Windows 8 could change this. In a few coming years, Wang sees a rebirth of the Microsoft camp behind Windows 8 as Microsoft reacts more efficiently to “consumer demands,” according to the report. Expect to see Windows 8 by 2013.

The Windows 8 is anticipated to run on wider range of devices, including, smartphones, tablets, Ultrabook clamshell laptops (latter rivaling Apple’s MacBook Air) and tablet-laptop hybrids.

Far from unifying the smartphone and tablet PC markets, it looks like the introduction of Google Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich may have made the gap between the two market spaces even wider. Android 4.0 brings many improvements over Honeycomb, its predecessor which can be found on many of today’s most popular smartphones and a handful of tablet PCs. Although you might think that PC vendors would love the idea of Google unifying all development efforts towards just one operating system, the reality is a lot more complicated than that.

At the official announcement Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich yesterday, the focus was mainly on Samsung’s new Galaxy Nexus, a device with a very large screen, to be sure, but is certainly not something that would be considered a tablet PC. What has gotten certain PC makers and some market watchers a bit worried is the fact that Google made no mention of tablets at all at yesterday’s official Ice Cream Sandwich announcement. Does this mean there will be a renewed focus on the smartphone space and tablet PC makers will be left out of from now on?

This is a major concern for tablet PC makers who are pinning their hopes on Android to compete with Apple’s iPad. With the imminent launch of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Google is expected to give a lot more than just a few new UI enhancements and novel features for the market of Android tablets to really catch up to the competition.

Ever since Amazon divulged the fact that its latest tablet e-book reader called the Kindle Fire was running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a lot of people have wanted to learn one thing: can it be rooted? Well, actually, some people would say that it’s only a matter of time until the Kindle Fire gets rooted, since the device is indeed running some form of Android, has a USB port, and can go into mass storage mode once connected to a computer. But there are cases wherein rooting is prohibited due to a device having a locked bootloader (this has happened to devices from other manufacturers several times in the past).

The director of Amazon’s Silk browser Jon Jenkins has shed some light on the matter in a talk with PC Magazine. “It’s going to get rooted,” says Jenkins, “and what you do after you root it is up to you.” Well, that certainly clears one thing up: if you want to root the Kindle Fire, Amazon won’t get in your way. After all, when you pay a good $200 for an electronic device, you should be able to do with it whatever you want. No matter if certain companies tell you otherwise (and after charging you much higher, at that).

With Nokia’s defection and Intel’s relative silence regarding the subject, you might think that you’ve already seen the last of the MeeGo operating system. Well, perhaps, but Intel is keeping MeeGo alive in cooperation with Samsung in a new Linux-based open-source mobile OS initiative called the Tizen project. A post on the official Tizen web site says that it is a new platform intended for use in a number of different ways such as in smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment devices. Since it was announced only yesterday, Tizen is currently still picking up steam. So far, Intel and Samsung are onboard, and a report on DigiTimes says that it has already won support from the likes of SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo, and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

At the same time, it is said that Asus and Acer are also coming on board, to add development to this new fledgeling OS. HTC is undecided. This new alliance of tech giants will have to go through a lot of hoops in order to surpass the success of current mainstream options like iOS and Android in the mobile space, but perhaps it will find better luck in other sectors of the consumer electronics market. For Asus, working on Tizen would probably be just like putting out a new netbook that runs MeeGo instead of Windows or Linux.

The “reimagined” version of Windows that Microsoft is currently working on holds a lot more secrets than that new Metro-style Xbox Live app. Along with many other UI and feature changes, Windows 8 will have a brand new Blue Screen of Death or BSoD for every time that it runs into an error or crashes for some reason (and how often does that kind of thing happen, right?).

Pictured above, Windows 8′s new BSoD is still blue, however it won’t be showing you a great big white wall of text this time around. Instead, it will simply say “Your PC ran into a problem that it couldn’t handle, and now it needs to restart.” On top of that, there will be a rather huge sad face right above the couple lines of text.

So now, the BSoD is even less helpful than before in letting you know exactly what went wrong, but at least it knows how you feel. And isn’t that what’s important?

If you are curious about Windows 8′s gaming capabilities, then you will do good to take a look at this demo that Microsoft made regarding the Metro-style Xbox Live application that’s going to be present in Windows 8. As you may already know, Windows 8 is the upcoming, next-generation version of Windows, a “reimagination” of the ubiquitous desktop OS that’s been fully redesigned to be touch-first and very tablet-friendly.

According to Avi Ben-Menahem, a Microsoft principal program manager lead who spoke at the recently concluded developer-focused BUILD conference in Anaheim, California, Microsoft will be “bringing everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows.” Windows 8′s very own Metro-style Xbox Live app will serve up “multiplayer functionality between two Windows PCs, between Windows and a phone or between Windows and the Xbox 360,” added Ben-Menahem.

At the moment, it’s not yet know when exactly the Xbox Live app for Windows 8 will become officially available. But then again, Microsoft hasn’t given us the exact release date of Windows 8 either. The real deal will most likely be dropped some time in 2012, though, and until then, if you want to see more of the Metro-style Xbox Live Windows 8 app then you can watch the video embedded below to tide you over.
