While the Wi-Fi Sony Tablet S went on sale in India in November 2011, the 3G versions of both Sony Tablet S and the dual-screened Tablet P have become available for Indian buyers. Apparently the 3G versions of these tablets were announced back in December last year, and should be on sale mid-January, but were delayed for unknown reasons.

Sony’s Android tablet with special customizations had made a splash last year. They included media remote features as well as PlayStation certification to be more distinctive from other Android tablets. Their hardware designs for the Tablet S and Tablet P, in typical Sony style, were also definitely more stylish and unique compared to many of the existing Android tablets already in the market.

It’s very much surprising that Sony was able to carve out a decent little niche for themselves in the Android tablet space, at least before cheaper, 7-inch tablets such as the Kindle Fire went out for an even bigger piece of the market.

The Tablet S will be sold for INR 33,750, while the Tablet P for INR 36,750. They can be purchased now from online retailer Flipkart.

The said eReader is now officially the company’s flagship model in terms of eBook readers, and because of this status, it gets frequently updated. In fact, it is the most updated eReader when compared to other similar devices from other companies.

Recently, a new firmware update for the Sony PRS-T1 has been released. This might become another selling point for the eReader, which currently boasts of being the world’s lightest eBook reader.

The firmware, which is now in version 1.0.04, offers many new improvements—so many that the update totals to over 100 MB in size. This also means that some users of the Sony PRS-T1 might have to make some room for the update on their devices.

Among the updates are improved touch panel functionality, improved stability when using dictionary search, improved connectivity to the Internet, and improved Digital Rights Management (DRM) contents compatibility.

It also fixes the bug in the dictionary when sometimes a short page flick unintentionally selects words and prompts look up as when as the one where users are unable to download some files via the eReader.

The firmware update may be availed via Sony Support.

Sony is mysteriously absent in the race since their tablets are Wi-Fi models only in the United States. They already have 3G models of Tablet S and Tablet P in Japan. There are rumors that Sony will be soon releasing a 3G tablet code named, Crystal, in the United States.

Not much has been revealed about the tablet’s hardware but it is believed to be restricted to HSPA+networks. Strange, since cheap tablets implement AT&T’s LTE data speed.

The leak reports also say that the tablet will be available on the first quarter of this year. 18th of February was believed to be the release date with a $409.99 price tag. This price will also include the two-year subscription contract.

The company representative said at an event in London that ICS would be arriving on both the Sony Tablet S and Tablet P at the same time during spring. Sony also said that both tablets would be having a new update which would bring Microsoft Office functionality. However, the company didn’t actually dwell on what this update would entail.

Sony also showed off its PlayStation Certified gaming platform on the Tablet S and announced that it is now compatible with a PlayStation controller. This means that gamers won’t have to use the on-screen controls for the games on PlayStation Store. This is something that OnLive has also been trying and by all accounts using a physical controller with the tablet makes gaming experience a whole lot better.

At the event, Sony was upbeat on its recent entry on the tablet market. It thought that it had the biggest selling Android tablet over this period but was it didn’t gave out any figures regarding on its sales.

Sony announces that it would give its VAIO catalogue a very minor refresh. The Spring refresh is mostly for the Z series with the option of a Carbon Fiber Silver color option alongside and optional LTE modem. The series also gets a processor step-up with Intel Core i5 and i7 options up to 3.5GHz. SSD is the only storage option for this line. Prices of the series start from $1,950. Meanwhile, both the S and E series will have similar processor bumps with both S and Z series able to lock into an extended sheet battery accessory. Minor processor improvements, battery options and LTE connectivity are the only improved aspects in this refresh and should be available next month.

CES 2012 is all about the ultrabooks or simply Intel and ultrabook manufacturers shoving ultrabooks to everyone’s face. Sony is going into action with an ultrabook of their own, displayed behind a plate of glass a 13-incher Sony ultrabook is sitting. It is such a handsome laptop but not as sexy as Acer Aspire S5 or HP Envy. Sony didn’t share much information about this device.

The laptop has silver color but it might change when it comes to retail. It has brushed aluminum texture and a shiny stylized VAIO logo stamped in the center. When the notebook is closed, it is not the thinnest ultrabook out there. It has glossy 13-inch display and Sony’s chiclet keyboard. Above the keyboard, there is a row of small physicall buttons that include power on/off, VAIO, Web and Assist. In front of the keyboard is a seamless clickpad and a VAIO logo on the left.

Connectivities include Ethernet jack, VGA and HDMI output. There is also an HDMI output, a memory card slot and a headphone jack. On the other side, it sits the power port, a fan and two USB ports.

Sony is displaying their concept design for an ultrabook which can be used as a traditional laptop or a tablet. The touchscreen display covers the keyboard when you want to turn the device into a tablet. You can slide out they keyboard and then prop up the display if you use this device into a tablet.

The design looks similar to the Samsung Series 7 sliding Windows tablet that went kaput. The Asus Eee Pad did come out with this design.

Just like the Eee PC Slider, Sony’s concept design puts the speakers behind the keyboard, this would muffle the audio when users use the the computer as a tablet. This pretty machine has few USB port and supports stylus input. There is no word for anything from price to processor to release date and such.

If you’re an attendee of the recent held CES, you would notice at Sony’s booth, enclosed with the glass case, the future Ultrabook concept. A source from Verge was given a chance to capture photos of the said laptop figure. But unfortunately, even vague specs of the prospect Sony Ultrabook weren’t able to disclose.

But as the image was shown, it has a much resemblance with the Sony Vaio Z. However, it appears to be thicker-seems to be a contradicting statement, given that the machine is categorized as an Ultrabook. Yet the point is, Sony is has started to be on the game of Ultrabook space. Just a hope for the public that external Graphics Processing Unit and port station will be placed along this prospect mobile computer from Sony.

Sony has been known for making extravagant laptops, hence it is anticipated then that the company would have lighter and slimmer Ultrabooks soon at much reasonable prices.
