Android is now being used by different devices including business tablets and smartphones. Sometimes, though, one just need to have a full-fledged OS to get something done. Windows 8 is certainly looking to be a good thing for mobile users with its functionality. SDG Systems announced a rugged tablet with a full desktop operating system: Ubuntu.

The tablet is called Trimble Yuma. It is a slight redesign to the previous Windows 7 business tablet. It has slightly updated specs. The hardware it boasts matches up nicely with netbooks. It is a 7-incher powered with a 1.6GHz Atom processor. It has WiFi, Bluetooth and 32GB or 8GB SSD. It has additional consumer/business oriented features like GPS, dual cameras and SDHC and ExpressCard slots.

As far as ruggedized is concerned, the Yuma looks superior compared to other rugged hardware out there. This tablet has magnesium alloy case to protect it from water and dust. It meets the United States Military Standard for durability and has an Ingress Protection rating of 67.

Last year, it has been reported that Canonical plans to bring the Ubuntu OS to mobile gadgets. It does not appear that SDG Systems is affiliated with Canonical but from the looks of it, it might be actually. Unfortunately, their device has been designed strictly for the business side of things. This baby is priced at $3695.

The Trimble Yuma is indeed a pretty cool device for being almost indestructible with a full-fledged OS. The KDE Spark tablet is a consumer alternative.

There has been images appearing all over the Internet of what appears to be the Nokia tablet. The device has the trademark curved screen seen on the Nokia Lumia 800. It appears to have a champagne color. This is an interesting news since the Nokia Champagne code name leaked last year from the “I’m a WP7″ app.

This is probably a Windows 8 tablet or an entirely different thing like the Nokia Booklet taken from an angle and then photoshopped or something.

The teXet TM-7025 should be device that anyone could hope for. This slate runs Android 2.3.4 with Ice Cream Sandwich update promised. The device is priced at a mere $200, so it’s a budget offer.

This slate uses a Boxchip A10 Cortex A8 processor (1GHz), supported by 512MB of RAM. Buyers will also get 4GB of internal memory with microSD card slot for expanded storage. Most of all, the teXet TM-7025 sports a 3D accelerator in a 7-inch capacitive TFT LCD display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and 5 point multitouch. HDMI will also give this model quad full HD resolutions when playing back content.

It also appears that this model also has a nifty feature that allows users to connect to a 500GB hard drive without extra power supply and up to 1 TB with optional power supply.

This is the first 3D tablet mode made by teXet. Other features include WiFi, a 0.3 megapixel front camera, a 3100 mAh Li-Ion battery, a miniUSB port and a chassis that measures 12.1mm in thickness. The device weighs 370 grams and everything sounds too good to be true.

The price tag for this slate begins at $200. It has already begun selling in Russia, but this should be out to other countries soon.

Lenovo has just confirmed that they’ll be giving Ice Cream Sandwich update to the ThinkPad tablet soon enough from its original Android 3.2 OS. It should be anywhere within Spring 2012, so in the next couple of weeks, users can expect an update on this device.

The device will probably get to keep its custom UI and get the performance improvements from ICS. Face unlock will be there as well and the battery span is expected to have an improvement. That won’t make the tablet any less bulky because of its physical buttons as well as its stylus huge. Nevertheless, this shouldn’t be much of a problem to some users, especially if they like to draw and take notes on a regular basis.

Other improvements include copy-paste function, error correction, camera app, automatic browser syncing, screenshot capture, voice integration, tabbed browsing, as well as data usage settings. So, this tablet should make it more interesting to some users.

ARM is now getting bigger and larger. Currently they are sitting pretty going into 2012 with huge market share in smartphones and tablets. According to a notebook maker, ARM will continue to rise because Intel and AMD just can’t compete with ARM in terms of pricing.

Intel already had the 32nm-based Medfield processors with an 11W power consumption, matching with Android 4.0 in January 2012. It will launch Atom processors with power consumption of less than 10W for smartphone / tablet uses in the second half of 2012. Also, Intel will keep upgrading manufacturing processes with Atom processors to be progressively based on 32nm Saltwell,, 22nm Silvermont and 14nm Airmont.

At Computex in June, AMD is releasing Hondo, an APU with power consumption of less than 5W for tablet PC’s usage. Competitive chips looks to come in to the market. They aren’t in the right price bracket to compete with ARM in 2013.

This device is originally a Chinese slate rebranded in Eastern Europe and packed with Android Gingerbread, 3G as well as WiFi connectivity. Anyone wanting to purchase this product would cost them 200 Euro.

This tablet sports a Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor, a Mali 400 4 core GPU and 8 GB of internal memory. The main camera on this device, unlike its predecessor, is about 2 megapixel and also a front VGA camera, while its 8-inch, 4:3 display has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. The Alldro 2 Speed supports DLNA, has a HDMI port as well as a couple of preinstalled apps from Allview. The 3G connectivity is possible via 3G dongle.

This newcomer measures 11.29mm in thickness and weighs 499gms, so this device is quite thin and light for average user experience. The Allview Alldro 2 Speed doesn’t promise much to its users nor is way better than the first Alldro Speed , but this tablet should be worth buying, especially for starters.

As the launch of the new iPad 3 is coming shortly, so do the rumors increase about its specifications. The new iPad 3 is expected to have LCD screen measuring 9.7 inches with a pixel display resolution of 2048 x 1536. This resolution is higher than the 1024 x 768 of the iPad 2, and therefore offers sharper images.

For some time, it had been speculated that the screen panels would be created by Sharp using their new IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) technology. IGZO offers a high resolution of up to 330 dots per inch without the need for LED backlight. Some, however, have already discounted the possibility claiming that the next-generation iPad will sport LGD or LG Display.

In any case, Sharp is manufacturing large quantities of the IGZO displays at the moment and none of these are available commercially. This fuels the possibility that Apple is still interested in using the product for the iPad 3.

IGZO displays are preferable over the traditional screens made of amorphous silicon because IGZO has a higher electron mobility. This enables more light to penetrate the back of the display, reducing the need for LED backlights, and thus, the production cost.

With tablets being produced for every imaginable purpose and niche, the high-end computer manufacturer Alienware has been discussing the production of a gaming tablet.

A gaming tablet is a special kind of portable PC that has been equipped with internals of powerful specifications like a fast CPU and a good graphics card to cater the needs of mobile gamers.

An example of this is the Razer’s Project Fiona, which is a concept tablet with a 10.1-inch multi-touch screen, core i7 Ivy Bridge processor, multi-touch functionality and accelerometer, THX audio, Windows 8 or even Windows 9 with Android as an overlay and integrated controllers at the sides.

However, many, including Alienware are skeptical about gaming tablets because of several inherent difficulties in using a slate to provide a good gaming experience.

Relatively simple games like Angry Birds pose little complexity, because they only demand a touchscreen interface. But the tablet interface seems unsuitable for more complicated games, especially those based from PC games because of the troubled control keys. For these games, the accurate controls given by a keyboard and a mouse are still ideal.

Still, gaming tablets cannot be completely disregarded. For one, games created precisely for a tablet PC could be made fitting for gaming slate controls. Moreover, new technologies could be developed such as eye-tracking input along with better CPUs and graphics cards.

Less bulky alternatives to the controllers of Project Fiona could also be created. Nonetheless, for now, Alienware is not rushing to create this kind of gaming tablet.
