Back in March we heard that Acer were releasing an Olympic version of their Iconia A510 in the UK, in time for the Olympic games which are being held in London this year. Exact release information and pricing were previously unknown but, we can now confirm that the Olympic styled Acer Iconia A510 will go on sale next month in the UK.

The Olympic model features the same specifications as the standard A510, which includes a 10.1 inch display, a 1.3GHz quad core Tegra 3 processor, 5 megapixel camera, 32GB of internal storage and runs on Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. The special edition model however has the five Olympic rings engraved on the back of the tablet. Acer are also preloading the tablet with a trial of Eurosport channels.

Carphone Warehouse will begin selling the Olympic A510 in June with a price tag of £350. Like before however, there’s still no word on whether this will see a release outside of the UK.

Asus have made it super easy to unlock the bootloader on the Transformer Pad 300. The Transformer Prime was the first Asus Android tablet to receive an official bootloader unlocked and Asus have continued the trend with the bootloader unlock tool for the Pad 300.

Even though it is an official bootloader unlocking tool, doing so does still void your warranty and you won’t be able to update your tablet the official way. If that doesn’t phase you though, head on over to the download page for the Asus Transformer Pad 300 bootloader unlock tool here, complete with instructions on how to unlock the bootloader of your Pad 300.

An earlier model of device was previewed during CES last January, packed with a 10-inch screen with a high resolution display of 1920 x 1200 pixels, and with support for 1080p video playback. The device came with a 1.3 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC quad core processor along with a full gigabyte of RAM. A customized version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the Operating System of the device.

It also has HDMI, micro-USB ports, and a micro USB slot. It is unknown, however, whether Acer will stick with these specifications for the current model. After the CES preview, Acer has kept rather silent about the device. The FCC website doesn’t reveal anything about the device, either, except that it will have Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 is expected to be more expensive than previous models, like the Acer Iconia Tab A510, which retails at $449, and the Acer Iconia Tab A200, which costs $299. However, Acer has not announced anything regarding its pricing.

This technology will also reduce costs for Apple, allowing the company to sell the device at a lower price.

As compared to the older G/F/F or glass/film/film layout found in previous iPad models, this new technology subtracts one layer. The G/F2 structure designates the electrode on the top and bottom of the ITO film, which is later laminated onto glass.

This technology also gives the iPad mini a higher level of transparency as well as a good level of sensitivity, despite earlier skeptics saying that the latter is difficult.

Apple’s chosen supplier for the materials is Nitto, while Nissha Printing and TPK are tasked to manufacture the touch displays.

The G/F2 thin-film touch technology joins the list of much-awaited features for the iPad mini, including a 7.85 inch Retina Display with a resolution of 2048 × 1536. It is also expected to come with 8GB of storage, and possibly, the new Apple new iOS 6 as well as Siri, Apple’s famous virtual assistant.

With Apple’s great influence on the tablet market, these specifications will undoubtedly set the bar higher for future 7-inch products.

Allegedly, there exist some lines of code that link Samsung to the Google Nexus tablet. The leaked code reveals the words Exynos 5250, which most likely means that the Google-branded tablet will likely have the ARM Cortex A15 processor running at 1 to 1.5 GHz. It will also probably have a Mali T-604 chip as its graphics processor, running at 533 MHz. Dubbed Vitnar, the graphics chip has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

These specifications seem plausible, although rather unimpressive. However, given the fact that the Google Nexus tablet will be sold for under $250, consumers should probably not expect for cutting-edge technology on the device.

Notwithstanding this, there is still room for doubt that these leaked specifications will be found on the Google Nexus tablet. For instance, the Vitnar graphics chip has a resolution that is the same as that found on the Super AMOLED screen. This has caused some to speculate that these leaked features are for the next Nexus phone instead of the Nexus tablet.

In any case, the public only has to wait for a while to know what the Google Nexus tablet will carry. The device is expected to make its first appearance at Google I/O next month.

Tablets running on Windows 8 and Intel hardware will start to be available come November this year.

Half of these Windows 8 tablets will have convertible and unconventional designs that will enable users to switch between a laptop and a tablet. Intel had already previewed one of these designs which they called Nikikski, a device with a transparent touchpad, during CES in January.

The Windows 8 tablets with Intel hardware will have an Atom Clover Trail processor, which Intel is pushing for mobile devices against ARM. Intel Clover Trail is based partly on a single core Medfield CPU with a 32 nm manufacturing process, which was demoed in this year’s CES in a Lenovo phone.

However, Intel has upped the ante by making it dual-core, ensuring faster computing speeds for the new Windows 8 tablets. As compared with Ivy Bridge processors, Clover Trail uses less power. Allegedly in the works also at Intel is a new CPU called Intel Bay Trail, which will have a 22 nm process with 3G and 4G capability .

Meanwhile, Windows is also debuting a Windows-based tablet with an ARM processor, Intel’s fiercest competitor in the mobile niche, as many portable devices now run on ARM.

When Apple announced the third generation iPad, they announced that there would not only be the standard Wi-Fi only model but, also a Wi-Fi and 4G. However as the UK doesn’t have a 4G infrastructure yet, there were complaints over the use of the term 4G. Apple also fell foul in Australia with the 4G reference.

In light of this, Apple have quietly changed the 4G references on their website and instead it’s been replaced with “Wi-Fi + Cellular”. This is true for the UK and Australia, as well as New Zealand and South East Asia. It’s also been changed to “Wi-Fi + Cellular on Apple.com which serves the US and Canada. In America, 4G is already available but, presumably it’s been changed on the US site and world wide for that matter so that all of Apple’s stores provide the same information and naming system to stop any confusion.

Looking for the cheapest Android tablet ever? Look no further than this 7-inch ICS-powered offering from Shenzen-based HuaYi, which asks for a mere 399 yuan or about $65 USD in exchange for a single unit. And before you write this off as one of those “no wonder it’s cheap, the specs are terrible” type of devices, take a look at its spec sheet. It comes with a 7-inch 800×480 pixel resolution multitouch display, a single core CPU based on the ARM Cortex A8 architecture, 512MB of device RAM, a microSD card slot, microUSB and HDMI-out, plus a front facing camera for web conferencing. Perhaps the absolute best thing about it is that it is supplied with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, so you won’t need to worry about whether or not an update will come for it at all since it’s already there. There is one caveat, though: you may have to order it straight from China.

A few days ago we heard that Nokia were planning on releasing tablets and hybrid devices. The comments were made by Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila who was quoted to have said that “Tablets are an important [market], so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future.”

We’re now hearing however that the comments were “misconstrued” a bit. Keith Nowak a Nokia spokesperson confirms that no tablet announcements or hybrid devices have been announced and that they are watching the tablet market. Nowak told eWEEK “What Mr. Ollila said has been misconstrued a bit. As we have been saying, we are watching the space with interest, but have made no announcements regarding a tablet product.”

While a tablet hasn’t been officially announced by Nokia, the comments by Nowak indicate that the possibility of a Nokia tablet hasn’t been completely dismissed by the company.
