Asus recently confirmed they were going release some new ultrabooks in their home country Taiwan. We can now confirm that Asus are bringing four ultrabooks to the US market.

The ultrabooks feature the latest Intel Core processor most commonly known as Ivy Bridge. They will also have 1080p IPS displays. The four models that will be released in the US are the UX21A, UX31A, UX32A and UX32VD. All of the ultrabooks will have a 1920×1080 display, including the UX21A which will have an 11 inch display, while the other three ultrabooks feature a 13 inch display. They will also feature a re-tooled keyboard, which makes the pitch 12% deeper as well as being backlit. The touchpad has also been tweaked.

The UX32A uses hybrid hard drives, while the UX31A uses SSD. The UX32VD differs to the UX31A as it has an NVIDIA GT 620M GPU but, apart from that they are pretty much identical. The 13 inch models will start at $999 but, as of yet there is no pricing information for the 11 inch UX21A but, we do know that there will be two different configuration models. One with an i5 processor and 128GB SSD, while the other configuration will have an i7 and an optional 256GB drive. Other than announcing the ultrabooks for the US, there’s no information on a release date.

Tablets running on Windows 8 and Intel hardware will start to be available come November this year.

Half of these Windows 8 tablets will have convertible and unconventional designs that will enable users to switch between a laptop and a tablet. Intel had already previewed one of these designs which they called Nikikski, a device with a transparent touchpad, during CES in January.

The Windows 8 tablets with Intel hardware will have an Atom Clover Trail processor, which Intel is pushing for mobile devices against ARM. Intel Clover Trail is based partly on a single core Medfield CPU with a 32 nm manufacturing process, which was demoed in this year’s CES in a Lenovo phone.

However, Intel has upped the ante by making it dual-core, ensuring faster computing speeds for the new Windows 8 tablets. As compared with Ivy Bridge processors, Clover Trail uses less power. Allegedly in the works also at Intel is a new CPU called Intel Bay Trail, which will have a 22 nm process with 3G and 4G capability .

Meanwhile, Windows is also debuting a Windows-based tablet with an ARM processor, Intel’s fiercest competitor in the mobile niche, as many portable devices now run on ARM.

When Sony announced the VAIO T13 and it’s smaller sibling the T11 the press release and information from Sony indicated that both models would ship with an Intel Core i3-2367M processor which is good but, last gen. However over on Sony’s German site, the specifications sheet lists the T13 ultrabook to come with one of Intel’s latest chips on board. The Intel Core i5-3317U, aka Ivy Bridge is currently found in Samsung’s Series 9.

It’s unknown whether the i5 processor will replace the i3 or, if it will be a different or customizable model.

As well as the Sony VAIO T13 ultrabook, Sony will also be releasing a smaller version of their T series ultrabook.
Both the T11 and T13 feature the same specifications, or hardware choices. The only difference between the two models does appear to come down to screen size along, which should also give them different price points. Both Sony ultrabooks should be available in the UK from early June.

To recap, the T series ultrabooks feature 4GB RAM, Intel i3-2367M CPU, 32GB SSD and a 320GB hard drive, HDMI and VGA ports, USB 2.0 and 3.0, along with Bluetooth 4.0, an ethernet port and Wi-Fi.

A few days ago we heard that Nokia were planning on releasing tablets and hybrid devices. The comments were made by Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila who was quoted to have said that “Tablets are an important [market], so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future.”

We’re now hearing however that the comments were “misconstrued” a bit. Keith Nowak a Nokia spokesperson confirms that no tablet announcements or hybrid devices have been announced and that they are watching the tablet market. Nowak told eWEEK “What Mr. Ollila said has been misconstrued a bit. As we have been saying, we are watching the space with interest, but have made no announcements regarding a tablet product.”

While a tablet hasn’t been officially announced by Nokia, the comments by Nowak indicate that the possibility of a Nokia tablet hasn’t been completely dismissed by the company.

When the first batch of Windows 8-powered devices arrives in the market, you’ll have the option to choose something that runs on either Intel or ARM. As you may already know, this is in part due to the two different flavors of Windows 8 that will be coming out. First, there is a standard, kind of desktop-like Windows 8 version that is effectively the next level of the x86 platform, and then there’s the ARM-flavored Windows 8 version (called Windows RT) for mobile devices with an emphasis on maximum computing power with the lowest TDP and longest battery life. Today, during during a meeting with investors at their headquarters in Santa Clara, California, Intel CEO Paul Otellini took the time to mention something that’s going to set Intel-powered Windows 8 devices apart from those that are running on ARM: legacy mode.

Legacy mode allows users to switch out of Windows 8′s standard Metro style option and use legacy programs, particularly enterprise apps that have been around for a very long time. “We have the advantage of the incumbency, advantage of the legacy support. Not just in terms of applications but devices,” said Otellini to Intel investors during the meeting. ARM’s lack of support for legacy mode leaves Otellini confident. The Intel CEO was quoted as saying, “I think they have a big uphill fight.”

Currently, there seems to be a lot of interest in upcoming Windows 8 devices, regardless of whether they are running on chips from either Intel or ARM. It would be interesting to see how the market adapts to the availability of two different types of devices which effectively open the door to two separate universes.

Those of you waiting on the official release of the Asus Padfone may need to wait a little while longer in certain regions, as the device is unlikely to make it to the market at the originally scheduled release dates. And no, this time Android 4.0 ICS isn’t the one to blame.

As it turns out, the Asus smartphone/tablet hybrid Padfone is being delayed due to the current lack of availability of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processors. This is according to a tweet posted on the Asus Indonesia Twitter page. As you can imagine, it will not be possible to release the Padfone without the processor that’s supposed to make it run, so for now it will be delayed until Qualcomm sorts everything out.

Asus can only say that the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip shortage is affecting not just them, but in fact all of Qualcomm’s customers. Now, that doesn’t exactly do anything to fix the problem, but at least Asus is honest and it seems it’s not really their fault that the Padfone is being delayed, anyway.

Yet, this time, the company opted to manage on building tablets and even hybrid devices in the near future.

It’s very recently when Nokia France manager bear out the prospect launch of Windows 8 tablet to be prepared by Finns. But now, another confirmation has boomed through Nokia’s chairman tackling this and more devices to come. Nokia Chairman Jorma Ollila guaranteed a set of new creations, however didn’t indicate their exact date of release.

Nokia is anticipated to unleash its slate this year together with the upcoming Microsoft’s Windows 8 availability. Hence, with this, lots of people are wondering how this Lumia tablets would look like, creating styles based on the Lumia smartphone’s design.

But the promise made by Nokia’s official was prior the shareholders meeting; and so creating pressure for both parties with Nokia’s invention of tablets and cool hybrid smartphone devices with 5-inch display.

Nonetheless, even these concepts and strategies are good, still, reasonable price matters.
