Check if your netbook has a free mini PCIe slot

What does it mean if your netbook has a free mini PCIe slot? Well, it’s an easy way to add an internal device like an SSD, 3G module or Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator. The last one is something you might want to try if you do have a free slot as it will give your Atom netbook a much needed boost in the HD video department. The list is below:

Asus 7″ series: 1 available, free (very early models only)
Asus 9″ series: 1 available (occupied by SSD)
Asus 1000HE: 1 available (3G available in Europe; cannot import; 2 slots)

    >> Asus 1000HE: 1 available (3G available in Europe; cannot import; 2 slots)

I’m not sure what that means. I have a 1000HE (Europe) but I dont have 3G built-in, so 1 slot should be free and usable e.g. for a Broadcom Crystal HD?

I am also wondering about the 1000HE, except the one sold in the states. If I am reading this right, that means someone has confirmed there are 2 slots total. 1 populated with a wifi card, and if you’re in Europe, you may have it populated with a 3G card, but that 3g card interface can’t be used in the states. Am I reading that correctly? Does anyone have any personal experience adding an extra pci-e to the 1000HE?

I contacted the ASUS support in Germany directly. They said there is only one slot in the 1000HE and that is used by the Wi-Fi card. I guess this applies to the german/european model.

The Samsung N310 in Canada was offered with a 3G version, also with 2 slots. Broadcom Crystal HD will work in the N310 but only if you put the Broadcom into the Wifi card slot, and put the Wifi card into the 3G slot. Doesn't work the other way. The Wifi antennas won't reach the new position, but the 3G antenna connectors can be connected to the Wifi card and it works.
