China-Based White Box Tablet PC Makers Increasing Shipments
The recent boom in the tablet PC industry has allowed small- and medium-sized businesses in China to try their luck in developing and manufacturing the devices. The so-called white box tablet PC makers are eating a considerable amount of market share from the tablet industry leader, Apple, with 3 million combined shipments per month.
This year, the combined number of tablet PCs from China-based manufacturers is expected to reach over 50 million units according to data from eMedia Asia, a market research company. Among the devices comprising these sales are Anrdoid 4.0 tablets priced only around $100 to $200 with decent specifications, some of which are competitive with more expensive models from foreign manufacturers.
For instance, a 10.1-inch tablet with a pixel display resolution of 1024 x 600 running on the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, 4 GB of internal storage capacity is sold for only $100 to $110.
There is a variety of device sizes from these white box manufacturers, with models ranging from 7-inch, 8-inch, 9.7-inch, and 10-inch measurements across their screens.
These devices are targeted at different markets, including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and their specifications and prices are designed adjusted to the needs of users in these markets.
