Well, what do we have here, it seems like everybody is really jumping into the netbook. Spotted at the IFA in Berlin last week was a new netbook which bears the name COMMODORE. If that rings a bell to you, well that’s exactly the same company who brought us the Commodore 64, an 8-bit home computer released in 1982.

Wikipedia’s entry about the Commodore 64 states:

The Commodore 64 is an 8-bit home computer released by Commodore International in August, 1982, at a price of US$595. Preceded by the Commodore VIC-20 and Commodore MAX Machine, the C64 features 64 kilobytes (65,536 bytes) of RAM with sound and graphics performance that were superior to IBM-compatible computers of that time.

There’s really nothing much to write about this netbook yet. But if indeed Commodore push this into production with features to match those of the netbook “biggies”, and with the name it carries, Commodore might just be on its way to creating a hit netbook.

We’ll certainly keep an eye on this one.

Hearing about a Commodore netbook really brings back memories. (My wife Ellen and I wrote the 1541 disk drive manual for the Commodore 64.) Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) any new computer bearing the name Commodore is not from the same company as the Commodore 64. That company went under long ago. But I’m glad to see the name lives on.

  2. Hey Jim,
Boy did I read your writing a lot back in the 80s. I think I still have all my manuals in my parents storage building and although I don’t have my original C64, I found a C128 a number of years ago and have a couple of newer model drives (can’t remember the model number).
Thanks for all your help back then. I wore out the case screws opening that dang drive to realign the heads.
Who is using the Commodore name now? I did a search for commodore and can’t seem to find the new mother company.
