DataJack, unlimited 3G for $40

This is something that should be interesting to those of our readers in the US. DataJack has just announced they are selling a no-contract 3G USB modem that will provide unlimited data for $40 a month. If you want to start on their service, the upfront fee is $99 but nothing else after. You can leave the service, cancel or download all you want at no extra cost.

It’s really enticing sure, since it can serve as a home connection being unlimited data at a very fast speed plus you can carry it with your netbook if you’re on the road. The monthly fee is really good as well, around $20 dollars lower than monthly 3G service from others. The initial outlay is a bit high for my taste but if you get to keep the modem even after termination, you might be able to unlock it for prepaid internet down the road. It also has a microSD card reader built-in if you fancy using it to read off your phone’s microSD card.

From personal experience, a service like this needs to have decent coverage, consistent connection and reasonable price for it to really take off.
