Eee PC 1000HE – Unboxing Photos and Initial Impression

I think I’m having a NAS (netbook acquisition syndrome) right now. NAS is a variation of GAS (gadget acquisition syndrome). If you have been closely following this blog, you’d remember that I just got a new Eee PC 1000H last week. I got it because I really need a replacement for my Eee PC 701 which I already sold to a good soul. And I thought the Eee PC 1000HE would not be available in the Philippines until two months or so. But then, some online sellers from Manila started selling the Eee PC 1000He. I quickly ordered without thinking what I’m going to do with the Eee PC 1000H. The Eee PC 1000HE was delivered to me this afternoon. And here are some photos and my initial impression of the Eee PC 1000HE.When I unboxed the Eee PC 1000HE and put out the netbook out of its packaging I was very impressed with the look and feel. My Eee PC 1000H was colored white and the Eee PC 1000HE I got was colored black and I would have to say that it is definitely better looking than the white one.
Immediately I noticed the chicklet style keyboard. I run my fingers through the keys and I could feel that this time around, the keyboard feels a lot like a real notebook’s keyboard. The touchpad definitely feels better than the Eee PC 1000H’s touchpad.
Booting up the Eee PC 1000HE was amazingly fast. Definitely faster than the boot up sequence of the Eee PC 1000H. As a reminder, the Eee PC 1000HE already has the Intel Atom N280 CPU, so that could probably explain the faster booting up sequence
Another big difference between the 1000HE and 1000H which I didn’t see immediately and only noticed it when my wife commented about it, is that the Eee PC 1000HE looks better and thinner than the 1000H.
And lastly, comparing the weight of the 1000HE and 1000H, the 1000HE is a little lighter.

I have an 1000HE that I received as a gift. I’m currently running eeebuntu 8.10 and love it.
The only thing I *don’t* like: While I agree that the black finish looks a lot better than the white one (apologies to many MacBook users out there), the problem is that the black finish LOVES your fingerprints. Nothing that covering the thing with decals won’t cure, though! *8-)
Phil – I agree. The glossy black finish is a magnet for fingerprints. I’m thinking that some transparent skins would cure that.
Speaking of eeebuntu 8.10, is your 1000HE on dual boot? or you totally got rid of XP?
