To augment the storage capacities of the Eee PC 901 (20GB SSD for Linux, 12GB  SSD for XP), Asustek will be giving Eee PC 901 buyers some 20GB of online storage to use.

“We think this is more flexible, we give the user remote storage on the Web and internal storage that’s shock proof,” says Asustek CEO Jerry Shen.

User data will be stored online on Asustek owned servers and will be managed by Chungwa Telecom. Details and other information about these online storage are not yet available though. Except for the fact that users can use this online storage for one year with no cost. Asustek did not mention too, whether what will happen after the one year free usage. If Asustek will charge users, the question is how much?

Although this may be a viable alternative for data storage needs, the uncertainty of those servers should still be considered, especially if you are planning to store valuable data in those servers. But if you’re just going to use it to store temporary not so important files, then it definitely is a good add-on for the Eee PC 901.

  1. Pretty smart of Asustek. Now that the competition has really caught up, the battle is now shifting to add-on services.

I wonder how would the rest of the competition respond.

  2. On the subject of file backup, sharing and storage …

Online backup is becoming common these days. It is estimated that 70-75% of all PC’s will be connected to online backup services with in the next decade.

Thousands of online backup companies exist, from one guy operating in his apartment to fortune 500 companies.

Choosing the best online backup company will be very confusing and difficult. One website I find very helpful in making a decision to pick an online backup company is:

    http://www.BackupReview.info

This site lists more than 400 online backup companies in its directory and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.

  3. Jhay – more online storage add-on for us consumers to feast on? =)

Jennifer – thanks for the heads up!

  4. Here’s some measures to consider: size for free (how much GB), transfer limits, upgrade options, public (URL) access to a subset of your files, sharing to a community (not everyone, not private, but a selected group – like a sports league). One site that seems to support all of these facilities is http://www.myotherdrive.com. I would like to see an automated option to keep my files in sync. I spoke with them about this, they said that feature is coming in an new release. No date was given, but they assured me it was on their list.

  5. I discovered a Memopal (www.memopal.com) “cutting edge solution for online
    backup”

They merged online backup, online storage and file sharing services into one product.

If you try this service you will notice that (contrary to most competitors):
    - You can access your files in (true) real time with a web browser
    - They really offer 250 GB (some competitors offer a fake unlimited web
    space, they say “fair use”)
    - You can share a file or many files with the 1-click-share functionality
    - Some of your files will be uploaded very very fast (turboupload)
    - The service and website are in 10 different languages

I’ve also found two useful guide to online backup on Wikipedia:

  6. WOOW. A Benefit to user, benefit to Asus and what more…….. Benefit to that Telecom company in Taiwan or China, whereever. Getting hands on that consumers data stored there? It’s probably not less questionable than having email with Google. But it’s just another step to what’s called “Transparent Me” with nothing to hide.

  7. 20 GB is a pretty good size, considering that most companys (if they even do offer it for free) will give 5gb out.
