Frontier adds a DVD drive to netbooks, can’t let go of the past

There certainly are a few netboos out there that have DVD drives in them but most users will eventually find out that it’s just so much dead weight with WiFi and USB drives as easier alternatives to sharing data. Still, there are a few people who do need these and this must be why Frontier from Japan released their new Pine Trail netbook.

The netbook has the following specs:

  • 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 with GMA 3150
  • 10.1″ 1024 x 600 glossy display
  • 2GB RAM
  • 320GB HDD
  • 802.11b/g WiFi
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 6-cell battery with 6.4 hour battery life
  • DVD drive (convertible to a 2nd HDD)
  • card reader, mic + headphone jacks
  • Ethernet port
  • multitouch trackpad
  • 10.4″ x 7.6″ x 1.5″ at 2.9 lbs.

Ah, so there is an opt out and you can include a second hard drive instead. But if you do need that drive such as if you still have an extensive DVD collection or play CD games via emulators, then this must be for you. Retail price is about $644 but you need to wait to see if it gets released outside Japan.
