Go Rugged With DRS Tactical Systems’ ARMOR tablet

It may sound like a cheesy comic book name, but DRS Tactical’s ARMOR series of rugged tablet PCs are looking pretty good. The rugged descriptor is usually tacked on to laptops or tablets to describe devices that are supposed to work in even the worst environments, and these babies look like they’ll work anywhere. Now DRS is coming out with a lightweight model in the form of the X10gx system.

They say lightweight but the X10gx weighs about 4.7 pounds – which is rather hefty for a tablet. It has a 10 inch screen and has some pretty good wireless options like Gobi Wireless Broadband, RF Switching, Integrated GPS, 802.11n Wi-Fi and short-range Bluetooth. They are all certified military standard in quality, too.  The chassis is made from magnesium alloy and can withstand some pretty good physical shocks to the frame. It can also handle shocks of the electrical manner, thanks to the tablet’s ShutOut technology.

Processing-wise, it is powered by an Intel Core Duo 1.2 GHz Processor (SU9300). Other features are a daylight-readable display, swappable batteries, a removable 2.5-inch hard drive, and the DRS tactical’s proprietary Quickback data recovery system. It can handle both touch and digital pen input.

The ARMOR X10gx is supposed to be ready by the middle of September, however, no prices have been set yet.
