HP Mini-Note 2133 getting black screens

If you are the owner of an HP Mini-Note 2133 then you might want to read this news on your netbook.

Despite it’s popularity and good reviews, it seems there could be a problem with the HP. There have been reports of the Mini Note simply going black and not booting back up. The advice being given is that the issue is being caused by a motherboard failure of some kind. Time will tell if the problem is going to effect more than a handful of Mini Note’s, hopefully not.

Hi MIni 2133 is a useless product..the way it is getting returned to vendors. Netx time I will have to think twice before advising someone for HP laptops. First you pay such a heavy price and then such problems…..that too with so many people and the company doesnt take any pain in solving it.

They are simply using their reputation.

Another one HP mini 2133 with black screen. It was just after windows upgrade. It stack during upgrade I switched it off then on and only black screen come on. Mouse pad led working but no other signs of live.

Exactly the same symptoms. I have bought my HP2133 as a not book where I keep my presentation for clients. Well…one thing is sure: no way I will ever recommend, mention or touch any HP product. And believe me, I do speak to many, many people holding key positions in the Nederlands.

Angry woman here with the same problem. 2 mos out of warranty and dead as a doornail. Went to HP site and they charge just to answer a question if out of warranty . I then found this thread while googling for an answer.

Has anyone resurrected their Hp Mini Brick yet? If so please share here.

    Thank you.

I think it is call the “HP black screen” and it is a problem of the graphic card overheating on the mother board affecting the HP DV series of laptop but it also affect the mini. . There are loads of people posting the problems and various radical fixes on youtube – the only solutions seems to be putting it in the oven or blasting it with a heat gun!

It is just bad design – the graphic card is basically set too close to the CPU chip and while CPU are much better at handling heat, the graphic card not so, also the fan doesn't work well enough, not enough air flow, mesh on the air slots get clogged up etc etc. Just don't buy HP

Hello oderflaus, I am having the same problem that you have seen on this page. I just got this from a friend and it won’t boot up. When I shut it down I see the screen flicker for a millisecond and then off. I have tried to take the ram out hdd out and to me it looks like on the hdd you have a power place on the very left of hdd and this is first time with laptop. Not knowledgeable on the in’s and out’s of these little things compared to my desktop. Can you please help me with this problem?

  • Poju

    Cheers

Got one brick from friend, bought used but working MB from ebay, it worked like 10 minutes, but it was goooood 10 mins :D fk Next my boards are going to owen

Well it looks like my 2133 lasted longer than some of the others. Bought in Jan. 2009, died in Jan. 2011. Same as everyone………black screen, won’t boot, only blue “on” light showing. I took mine to our resident tech support guy (I work at a large organization). He’s an expert. He tried everything on it, then took it apart and saw where there was some melted-looking component inside. Tried replacing processor, etc., to no avail. It’s now in the recycling bin in our tech dept. I’m very upset that HP ripped me off for $600, and now I need to buy a new laptop (it definitely won’t be a mini, and it most definitely won’t be an HP).

  • Sue Diplock

Yes – just happened to me and the price HP quoted to replace the motherboard was more than I paid for the computer. Not a good deal!

Glad I read all of these comments before I wasted money trying to repair this Mini2133 piece of junk. Oh, well… guess I can use it as an expensive, oversized paper weight. Another thought is to donate it to the HP Foundation so that they can count it among their many assets.

My HP MINI also gave up, blank screen, no response at all. Fan starts as soon as processor heated up. Nothing else.
I tried all possible solutions recommended at this site (freezer, hot air blower, disconnect BIOS battery, you name it….) no success. I suppose this is a basic motherboard problem, which should be corrected similar to motor vehicle recalls. (I believe there are hundreds of users with the same problem, this site is only the tip of the iceberg).
Any idea what to do? Any action to force HP to respond?
Or anybody with a working solution?

Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your site and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your opinions.

    Thankfully I didn’t buy the HP mini-note 2133 when I was looking for a netbook…

  • Jferedoes

I already wrote that my Mini could not be revived. I talked to HP Australia. They seemingly knew the problem, but flatly rejected any claim or help. They said buy a motherboard for the price of a new one. They think that a company of this size can afford anything. My message is simple: Do not touch anything with HP written on it and spread this message all over the world.
I dismantled the Mini and advertised all usable parts (screen, HD, memory, etc.) on eBay Australia.

  • Bsp055

Just got one yesterday and it died four hours later. Ordered if from Office Depot. Will they take it back? I’d like my money back.

  • Jferedoes

Of course, you are within warranty. Do not accept replacement. Ask money back, because the next one will do the same.(You may show letters copied from this page). Or buy another brand, Toshiba has got similar products. This HP Mini is an absolutely shit product.

  • C_ludlow6

I just did this to mine, now it works fine again!

  • Karenob123

    It worked! Thanks so much!

  • Rbettridge

    hi guys.

I too had this problem. It was given to me as a christmas present.
The fans would work and the screen would come on for a couple of seconds, make a *pop* noise and then the screen would go blank.
It kept doing this until the screen wouldn’t come on at all.
So my dad rang up HP and they seemed happy to pick up my laptop up.They picked it up and fixed it.I had it back within a week.
The screen now works perfectly, but I have this problem where if i knock the left hand corner of my laptop. it now resets :/

I recommend just sending the laptop off for repair. if this is a common problem, they should be more than happy to fix it.

    SOLVED.

after i tried all your possibilities, i have opened my hp 2133 and put my hair drier on the motherboard chipset and circuits for about 5 minutes (very close to the motherboard). then I let him cold it self, and put all the parts toghether, and guess what? The fan was spinning, the display was working, and the magnific vista was booting up(Not my laptop, one of my friends).

Good look with that, and sorry for my language.. if you need help you can send me email pandadesignro @yahoo:disqus .com

i wish you all the best, and hope to get your fixed also.
Sorry for my language, i am from Romania, english is not my best.

This HP Mini is a quality product.

This Laptop has nice design; It is bright, crisp high resolution display. It has powerful speakers, So you can hear music by putting Laptop away from you. It’s price is also reasonable.

  • Ajoy

I would think that setting a hair drier directly on the motherboard chipset and circuits would create enough static electricity to fry the circuits.

Hi, I have had my HP mini for not even three months and the screen went black on me but the power light is on, the caps lock light is on(flashing), the two other key lights that are red remain on.  I removed the battery for a bit thinking that might help but to no avail it still doesn’t work.  I even tried some of the suggestions on this site………. nothing.  I hope BestBuy can help me.   I only wish I saw this site before purchasing the HP mini………

  • Elkristi

    Hi there!

I have a new problem with my HP 2133. It went black and for half a year ago. I didn’t do much about it. I thougt of buying a new mini but one day to I told my brother about it. He tried to fix it but failed. He came over this pages and adviced me to leave it in the department where I bought it. I did and they at least fixed the problem with the black screen. My new problem now is that after I had installed all the downloads from Microsoft the mini “hangs” for hours. So it is still useless to me. Anyone out there knows what to do next?
