Intel & Micron begin 25nm NAND flash production, to result in cheaper and bigger SSDs

SSDs are about to get cheaper and much more roomier, thanks to IMFT, a joint venture between Intel and Micron which has started production of 25nm NAND flash, seeing the first shipments of final products to appear before the end of 2010. Volume production actually won’t happen until sometime in Q2, but you cant count all your eggs in the basket now and rest assured that the money you save up for Christmas this year will be well spent on Intel’s new SSDs when they finally come out. As part of Intel’s 3rd generation X25-M SSDs, these will come in at 160GB, 320GB and 600GB variants. The question remains, how much will these sell for? At the moment, SSDs can be considered affordable mostly by enthusiasts, but when products using the new 25nm process come out, perhaps the mainstream market will finally be able to afford it.
