Jolicloud Nears Final Release, Switches to Chrome for Web Apps

Just before releasing the Jolicloud OS, the developers decided to switch to Chrome for rendering their web apps. Previously, Jolicloud was running on Mozilla Prism.  So, all 600+ web apps running on the Jolicloud App Center will be converted to Chrome, which in case you forgot is also still in a perpetual beta mode.

The good thing is that on the user side, nothing needs to be done for their existing apps, the migration to Chrome will encompass converting currently running apps of users through the update manager.

So what does the switch from Prism to Chrome brings to netbook users using Jolicloud? Here are the benefits:

  • Faster browsing on older netbooks experience thanks to the V8 JavaScript engine
  • More efficient use of the memory
  • Chrome extensions support within all web apps
  • Perfect support of Facebook Connect, Connect Twitter, and Google Authentication
  • Support of HTML5 features such as offline support and Web sockets used by the platform Jolicloud
  • Ability to render iPhone and Android apps HTML5 Natively
  • Good performance on ARM netbooks and tablets

In addition to this announcement, the Jolicloud blog also mentioned some other developments including:

  • new desktop mode for nettops with larger screen than netbooks
  • improved Jolicloud Express
  • 100% compatibility with Intel netbooks

The final release of  Jolicloud will push through this month.
