New tech turns SIM cards into WiFi hotspots
Sagem Orga and Telefonica have developed a new technology that squeezes in a WLAN modem inside a tiny SIM card, turning any mobile phone into a WiFi hotspot. It’s called the SIMFi and it aims to provide easy access to the internet to notebooks and netbooks without any installations and setups.
Remy Cricco, Technology Innovation Manager at Sagem Orga said, “If customers can connect their notebooks to the Web anytime and anywhere by simply using what they have with them most of the time and what is the most trusted secure device – the SIM card – adoption can be expected to be enormous.”
This would be the perfect solution for those with iPod Touches and iPads who want ubiquituous WiFi without strings attached. Just pop in the SIM into your existing phone and you have instant wireless access. It’s also a much easier solution versus having to tinker with software apps, tethering and other things.
