NVIDIA ION 2 Optimus will prime your netbook for better battery life

As anyone who has used a notebook with both integrated and dedicated graphics cards will tell you, switching between them is too much of an effort. Most just keep the setting on if they game a lot or off if they don’t, leaving them with a system that isn’t as efficient as it should be.

NVIDIA now has a new system called the Optimus that will automatically rev up a graphics boost when needed and only when needed. It’s designed for the GeForce 200M, 300M GPUs and also for the new ION 2. It supports the new Pine Trail Atoms as well so lets hope we can have this in some netbooks soon.

Some reports are saying this isn’t done as automatically as it’s claimed with the graphics card keeping quiet and off for some games. I’m sure they’ll update this as new games come along and that this will help users out when they need a graphics kick while giving a bit more battery life during regular use.
