OpenPC is an open source and crowdsourced PC

Community-driven openDesktop.org just put up its latest project, the Open-PC. From the outside, it might look like a plain Linux powered Atom desktop but it’s the process that went into it that will make even Richard Stallman proud. The entire project from software to the design was decided by the community. Even the price has put to a poll.

Open-PC

  • 1.60GHz Intel Atom N330 dual-core with GMA 950
  • 3GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • KDE Linux, preconfigured
  • ASRock main board
  • Mini-ITX case
  • 250W power supply

You can get it from their site for €359 (US$498), a bit more expensive than making your own but rest assured you are helping the open source community since €10 is donated to the KDE project with every purchase.

The price is too high since I can get a similarly specked AsRock ION 330, which is more compact and has better video and bigger hard drive, for around USD 300-350 and put an OS I want on it as it comes without one. And I would have money left to donate to the KDE project developers, if I want to.
