crossfold-dragonfly-netbook-concept

If netbooks weren’t portable enough for you, CrossFold DragonFly has a concept netbook design which is even smaller than average. Similar in idea to the Butterfly keyboard, which expands to full size when opened, the DragonFly also features folding technology. When closed, the device can fit aptly in your pocket, unfold it once and it turns into a flip phone, with a working keypad and screen. Open it up once more and it becomes a working PC from your pocket.

The concept from CrossFold, is just that, with no word on whether this will become a reality, but I for one hope it will. Something like this isn’t going to come cheap though, so better get saving. You can view a video of the concept device in action below.

I think having the screen split is not a problem at all. I would love to see a refined version on the market for sale. He has identified the problems so many mobile devices have been so ignorant to realize, that is a full PC needs a keyboard and must be small enough to carry in a coat pocket in order to be a benefit over a laptop.

The SonyP is not that good to me as it is more of P for purse type device for women. You can not carry a P in your large coat pocket. If a Sony P was say more like the size of 7.5" x 4" x 1" it would be an alternative to a laptop for business men on the go. That smaller size would still provide a reasonable keyboard to touch type. The dragonfly would clearly be a better touch type keyboard computer but I could see a strong demand for both types of mobile devices.

Right now there is not one option for a man whom needs a full PC as all the options have no touch type keyboard and BT keyboards are a joke and by the time you carry both you might as well carry a laptop.

From the look of the video it seems like an artist's conceprt rather than a real engineers design. I wonder how long it would be before a rel protoype shows up.

As a concept it is innovative. The netbook mode looks like a Sony Vaio p design. The only problem for me is that the screen is really in two parts, and could not be used to show a single window, somnething really necessary to use as a netbook. The split keyboard is not really a problem (touch typing is rare in netbooks). The smartphone mode has no problems that I can see.

Also if it runs something like Moblin or Android, you can have a single OS that works both for a phone and a netbook. Overall a great concept with only a small annoyance.
