Scraping The Bottom Of The Profit Margin With The 73 Dollar iPad Clone

We’ve been seeing a lot of iPad clones coming out of China recently. This is mostly because Chinese manufacturers, like any skilled businessmen, know a hit when they see one. The fact that Apple has crossed the one million unit mark for sales is highly indicative that the public is ready and willing for the tech, unlike when Microsoft first introduced the concept way back when.

Nowadays, the most interesting thing other than their specs is the price tag. The iPad costs nearly 600 dollars – but we’ve seen Shenzhen-made tablets costing a half or a fourth of that. Well, we better add a lower price point then – Caszh, another Shenzhen-based company is going to put into the market the cheapest one yet at 73 dollars. Yes, less than a hundred dollars.  Here are the device’s specs, according to Shanzai.com:

OS: Google Android
Display: 7-inch resistive touchscreen @ 800 x 480
Chipset: VIA 8505
Connectivity: Wi-Fi
Camera: Yes (resolution not known)
Memory: 128MB DDR2
Storage: 2GB flash storage
Weight: 388 grams
Price: USD 73
Availability: June 2010.

Looking at the VIA 85r05 processor, you probably won’t be getting much performance out of it – however, the price, the weight and the fact are rather big selling points.  If you’re looking for something that’s cheap and easy to replace – this will probably be it.
