Looking for the cheapest Android tablet ever? Look no further than this 7-inch ICS-powered offering from Shenzen-based HuaYi, which asks for a mere 399 yuan or about $65 USD in exchange for a single unit. And before you write this off as one of those “no wonder it’s cheap, the specs are terrible” type of devices, take a look at its spec sheet. It comes with a 7-inch 800×480 pixel resolution multitouch display, a single core CPU based on the ARM Cortex A8 architecture, 512MB of device RAM, a microSD card slot, microUSB and HDMI-out, plus a front facing camera for web conferencing. Perhaps the absolute best thing about it is that it is supplied with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, so you won’t need to worry about whether or not an update will come for it at all since it’s already there. There is one caveat, though: you may have to order it straight from China.

In a bid to gain more market share, makers of 7-inch tablet PCs have started dropping prices as a way to attract more consumers. This same move has also apparently been applied to tablet PCs with 10-inch screens nowadays. The quest for the top of the tablet PC space has become much harder with the recent introduction of the very affordable Amazon Kindle Fire, plus the fact that there are so many smartphones these days that are capable and much more pocketable (which is a plus to a lot of consumers).

Recent examples of cheap 7-inch tablet PCs include the ViewSonic ViewPad 7e, which was launched for $199 but now reportedly costs even less than that. However, it’s interesting to note that certain companies like Asus still insist on putting a high price on their products (such as the recently unveiled Transformer Prime 10-inch Android tablet). I’m curious to see if this type of strategy will still fly when the soon-to-be-launched Apple iPad 3 finally becomes available.

Craving for Android on a 7-inch tablet? That’s exactly what the folks from Kinpo are busy with these days–they are working on a 7-inch Freescale-powered Android tablet that’s tentatively called the Kinpo Thin Client, as demoed in the Freescale booth during Computex 2009. The 7-inch screen of the Kinpo Thin Client sports a WVGA 800×480 resolution and as you might have guessed, it is a touchscreen. It appears to run pretty smoothly in the video but it is obvious that Android hasn’t been optimized for the device itself yet. Perhaps, as Kinpo completes the work needed for the Thin Client, we’ll see it even more as a finished product than as a prototype. Watch the video of the Android-based Kinpo Thin Client after the break.
