Amazon has posted the results outlining the costs of pushing the Kindle Fire. Amazon’s device sold almost 177 percent over the past year. However, its net profit dropped 58 percent to $177 million. The profit slash came despite its 35 percent sales hike to just over $17.4 billion.

Kindle Fire has been Amazon’s bestseller since its release, but it’s not known what this means without context. Amazon has always argued that it doesn’t post its figures and keep it as a competitive secret. Critics have pointed to Apple being very open with its numbers and have suggested that Amazon avoids device numbers to cover up any of its flaws.

Whether or not these speculations are accurate, rumors and outlooks have Amazon cutting production by large numbers without the momentum of a holiday to drive units. Apple has often seen only mild slumps or even increases in numbers of its devices in the past few years.

Strategy Analytics reported that around 10.5 million Android tablets were shipped during the fourth quarter of 2011. That makes more than a 300-percent jump from that of last year’s, while the increase in Android tablet shipments means that Android devices now make up about 39 percent of overall tablet sales.

Mark Spoonauer at Laptop Magazine asked what role do the Amazon Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet played. Surprisingly, about 40 percent of the 10.5 million tablets were NOOK Tablet or Kindle Fire devices.

While both tablets run on Google Android, the NOOK Tablet and Kindle Fire both ship with highly modified versions of Android, and neither includes the Android Market. Hackers, however, have figured out how to install Android 4.0 or a more Google-like version of Android 2.3 on the Kindle Fire by replacing the bootloader as well as the recovery software and loading CyanogenMod on the tablet.

Work is underway with the NOOK Tablet as well, and hackers have already figured out how install the Android Market or to sideload apps that don’t come from the B&N Shop on that tablet.

But it’s likely that most NOOK Tablet and Kindle Fire owners are using the pre-installed software on their tablets, which means that while Android tablets are gaining in market share, some of the most popular “Android” tablets don’t look or feel like they’re running the software that Google designed, and don’t download apps, music, movies, or ebooks from Google’s online stores.

Words are coming in that Amazon Thursday has made the best sales for its Kindle devices during the holiday season.

While the online store didn’t have the exact figure on how many units were sold per model, Amazon did confirmed that its customers have purchased millions of Kindle Fires and Kindle eReaders. The company also noted that its #1 and #4 best-selling eBooks, which was released this year were published by independent authors via Kindle Direct Publishing platform.

The Kindle Fire was one of the most popular device today, followed by the Kindle Touch and the Kindle. Amazon also mentioned that gifting of Kindle eBooks has to jumped 175%, between Black Friday and Christmas Day, compared to last year.

As of now, Amazon has not released the exact sales numbers yet, nor for its Kindle devices, though there are some who suggests that Amazon may sell more than 5 million Kindle Fire tablets in 2011.

The update should be delivered over-the-air. Instructions for manually updating via USB can be found on Amazon’s website. For those who have not received it the OTA update yet, follow the instructions below.

Download your software: Click on the link below to download the software update file directly to your computer: Download Software Update 6.2.1

Transfer software to your Kindle: Turn your Kindle Fire on and unlock the screen. Then connect it to your computer using a USB cable (sold separately). Drag and drop the new update file from your computer to the kindleupdates folder on your Kindle drive. (The drive is typically displayed as a “device” icon).Monitor file transfer and disconnect: Check your file transfer progress to ensure the file transfer to your Kindle Fire is complete before disconnecting. After the file has transferred successfully, tap the “Disconnect” button on your Kindle Fire screen to safely disconnect your Kindle Fire from your computer. Disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle Fire and your computer.

Start the software update: Ensure your battery is fully charged. Tap the Quick Settings icon in the top right corner of your screen, then tap “More…” then Device. Select “Update Your Kindle.” (This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed or if the file transfer was not successful.) Your Kindle Fire will restart twice during the update. After the first restart, you will see the Kindle Fire logo on the screen.Once the update is complete: The Device screen will display “Current Version: 6.2.1″ when the update is complete.

According to Amazon, the 6.2.1 contains the following goodness:

Enhanced fluidity and performance – The user interface felt choppy, especially with items like the coverflow or “carousel” feature. This update aims to improve that.

Improves touch navigation responsiveness

Adds the option to choose which items display on the carousel and remove the ones you don’t – Many people were concerned about their privacy because the carousel would display items you might not want others to see

Adds the ability to add a password lock on Wi-Fi access – This improvement is to help you keep your kids reading books and not watching YouTube

Currently, the Kindle has seven available series including the Kindle Fire, Kindle eReader, Kindle Touch Wi-Fi, Kindle Touch 3G, Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi, Kindle Keyboard 3G and Kindle DX big-screen. According to Amazon, almost a million of Kindle units were sold for the past three weeks and the Kindle Fire is at top of the charts.

Amazon has started to offer consumers affordable eReader devices for almost four years. In fact, Kindle generations presented a lower price on the market; almost half an iPad costs. These slates have used wireless connectivity for downloading, browsing and reading eBooks, newspapers, blogs and other digital media. Yet Kindles even offer much of ease and cozy reading access through the integration of an E Ink electronic paper display that flaunts up to 16 shades of gray that enables the users to enthuse as if they are reading on a real paper.

As of the moment, Amazon is still on the way of creating new more upgraded Kindles to feature latest software including the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As the excitement over the Kindle Fire begins to diminish, Amazon is now moving to address some of the criticism surrounding its tablet. This will be done through a software update. The company said the update should improve overall performance and multitouch navigation, while also adding a feature that will allow users to delete their browsing history. This would be a good news to users who value their privacy.

According to Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener, the update will be made available to users over the air in less than two weeks. It’s unclear, however, if other common complaints, such as occasional lockups that require a hard reset as well as insufficient volume for movies and Wi-Fi issues will be addressed as well.

Not all issues can be fixed by software, though. The Kindle Fire has been criticized for its lack of physical volume buttons and an awkwardly placed power button that makes easy to turn the device off inadvertently.

Amazon has built its name in the eBook Reader industry for years. In fact, its previously released Kindle Fire just received a huge success over the past few weeks it’s been placed in the U.S. Market. Kindle Fire which referred as more than a typical tablet offers outstanding entertainment value over its techno-simplicity at a rational price of $199.

Apparently, reports are circulating about the distribution plan for Amazon’s Kindle Fire in other country’s retail stores. Good news for Kindle subscribers who lived in UK since today’s news revealed the upcoming release of Kindle Fire on January 2012 in UK.

Though this 7-inch tab lacks 3G wireless, built-in cameras, microphone as well as the GPS and location services, in terms of specs the Kindle Fire still boasts impressive features that enable users for easy storing and utilizing of digital eBooks, magazines, music and videos of their choice. Along with its Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS also comes the Android app store that includes most of must-have applications such as Pandora, Netflix and Hulu Plus.

As for now, Kindle Fire is still readying for final cue regarding the exact date and price before its final set for UK Market.

It was just a few weeks since the the Amazon Kindle Fire has been made available in the market but it’s now widely declared as the Android tablet to beat. Fourth-quarter sales estimates have been as high as 5 million units. In a note to investors on Monday, Evercore Partners analyst Robert Cihra said he believes Amazon’s line of Kindle Fire tablets will make up 50% of all Android slates sold in 2012, leaving Apple’s iPad as the only tablet essentially unaffected by Amazon’s blockbuster device.

“While Amazon’s Kindle Fire has come out of the gates strong, as expected, we see Apple maintaining its competitive lead, if anything accentuated by what now looks like the only tablet to so far mount any credible iPad challenge apparently needing to do so by selling at cost; not to mention Amazon’s success may just vaporize other ‘for profit’ Android tablet OEM roadmaps (e.g., we est Amazon 50% of all Android tablets in CY12),” Cihra wrote according to Forbes’ Apple 2.0 blog. ”Meanwhile Apple goes on as the only vendor able to cream off the most profitable segment of each market it targets, whether tablet, smartphone or PC.”

While the analyst believes Amazon’s tablets will have a minimal impact on the iPad, he did adjust his first-quarter 2012 revenue estimate for Apple from $39.4 billion to $39.1 billion. Additionally, he now thinks the company will sell 14 million iPads, which is 1 million fewer than he had predicted earlier.

A major supplier of touch panels for Kindle Fire, Wintek, has recently raised its internal forecast of shipments to Amazon to 3-3.5 million before January.

Sources of Digitimes, however, pointed out that some makers in the supply chain have built up inventory of needed parts and components steadily, and OEM Quanta has also kept its shipments regular to avoid over stockpiling of inventory in case there is a reverse in order visibility.
