Microsoft crush netbooks with XP limitations

It wasn't long ago, that we reported on MSI discontinuing the hybrid netbook, the MSI Wind U115. Using both an SSD and HDD, Microsoft requested that the company cease production of the netbook, most probably due to Microsoft Windows XP operating limitations. The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is another example, mysteriously removed from the Dell website . When Windows 7 is released, only netbooks with a display of up to 10.2 inches, will be given the cheaper version of Windows 7, while anything above that, while still a netbook, notebook licensing will be charged.

There's also other netbooks, which due to the licensing limitations from Microsoft are going down and not as successful as they could be. Archos 10 features a 500GB HDD and 2GB, which is above the maximum of 160GB HDD and 1GB of RAM, so the higher spec model is only available with Ubuntu. This is also the case with the Dell Mini 9 with 2GB of RAM, Windows XP can not be run on it, only the 1GB model.

The final netbook which broke Microsoft's rule, is the Everun Note. From the outside, looks like a typical netbook, 7 inch display. But inside it packs a dual core processor, where as Microsoft view netbooks as having single core CPUs. The netbook is available for $599 but it doesn't include any operating system, which is where the netbook gets even pricier.

Archos 10s “MiniPC” makes an official debut

This has been in the pipeline for months, and based on the original press release it's actually a bit delayed, but Archos has finally unveiled the Archos 10s "MiniPC" alongside the just announced Archos 9 UMPC Tablet. The Archos 10s netbook is an updated version of the Archos 10 netbook, sporting a slightly slimmer and lighter case than its predecessor, constructed from Aluminium and magnesium. The Archos 10s features a 10.2-inch (1024 x 600 resolution) screen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard disk and Windows XP Home. Of course, there's built-in Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 1.3MP webcam, choices between 3-cell or 6-cell batteries and the usual number of free netbook ports and jacks. It will be available later this month but the price still hasn't been specified.

The Tablet UMPC is going to be relevant again, with the announcement of the Archos9, the first 9-inch Tablet UMPC running Microsoft's Windows 7 OS. This sexy little machine is billed by Archos as a MiniPC that does away with keyboards in exchange for a virtual on-screen keyboard and stylus support on a resistive touchscreen display. As it comes pre-loaded with Windows 7, multi-touch is going to be one of its top features, though we're not exactly sure if that's such as good idea with the screen being resistive and all. It still looks like a pretty interesting offer, though, as the Archos9 is equipped with Intel's new Atom Z515 processor, 80GB hard drive, built-in Bluetooth and two DVBT TV tuners with "diversity reception," as Archos puts it in its press release. Besides on-screen controls, it also has several hard buttons on its sides for easier access and controls. Archos hasn't announced a price or release date, but from the looks of it, we're betting a lot of people are going to save up for one. Watch out for additional details here.

While Archos jumped late onto the netbook bandwagon by releasing the 10-inch Archos 10 netbook a couple of months ago, the company looks like it wants to be the first one to come out with a full working Android Internet media tablet. At least that's what one can gleam from Archos's latest press invite for an event that is scheduled for June 11th in Paris. The fact that Archos is working on Android should be no surprise, given the popularity the platform has these days from open source software advocates, but it's interesting how Archos has chosen to work on an Internet media tablet instead of netbooks like many other existing netbook makers. Perhaps they see more success in tablets, or less competition, or bigger profits. There are no clear info on specs right now, except what were announced last February by TI in a press release. We'll have to wait for an official Archos announcement to get the full list of features.

Another week and another netbook maker adds a pink version to their netbook variations. This time round, the recently released Archos 10 is now available in a hot pink model as well as the basic black version.

Both models have the same specifications, including a 10.2 inch display, 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM and an Intel Atom N270 processor. Whichever color Archos 10 netbook you choose, neither will set you back any more than the other as they both retail for $399.

Those of you anticipating the release of the 10-inch Archos 10 netbook will be glad to hear that it is now finally available for purchase, ahead of schedule, at that. It was originally projected to be released in April, but Archos's official web site already lists it as available now, for a starting price of $399. And what exactly will you get with the $399 that you're going to shell out for it? Well, typical netbook fare, really, including a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, up to 1GB of RAM, ample-sized keyboard and touchpad, plus Windows XP for an OS. Let's see, why to get this one? To rebel against the market leaders Acer and Asus, I guess.

By now I'm sure you're already familiar with the Archos 10 netbook. It's got typical netbook features, including a 10-inch screen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM and Windows XP as its OS. Seems adequate, but it could use a little upgrade. Which is why we're not entirely surprised to find out that Archos may soon intro a new version of this very same netbook, with a few new features and possibly a price reduction for the old model.

According to press release, Archos is preparing to launch the Archos 10s, a netbook encased in a metal shell that's scheduled to go on sale on April. Among its main selling points are: dual WiFi and 3.5G connectivity, 20mm thickness, 6-cell battery. Expect to learn more about this as more info comes in.
