There is a version of Ubuntu which is optimized to work well on netbooks, the Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It’s now been reworked for use of smartbooks that are powered by ARM processors. One of the problems Ubuntu Developers encountered, is that the interface needs 3D hardware drivers but, this isn’t found on all ARM chipsets at present. So the interface has been recoded to use 2D Enlightenment Foundation Libraries instead. That said, most users won’t actually notice the difference. One other tweak they’ve made, is that the program launcher is easier to theme than the current 3D version.

The Hivision PWS700CA is one of the best Android-powered devices that you’ve never heard of. For some reason, it’s being called a laptop by some people, but with its 7-inch 800×480 screen 720p screen I think it’s closer to being a netbook than its full-sized counterparts. Instead of using Intel’s new Atom processors, it utilizes a Rockchip RK2808 600mhz ARM926 processor, which appears to be adequate in powering it and its operating system: Android. The best part about this is that the Hivision PWS700CA may be sold for as low as $100 as ARMdevices.net speculates. That would surely bring down the price of a lot of other competing products, provided that the Hivision PWS700CA maintains its level of usability and ease of use shown in the video right after the break.

We have another round of spec leaks here but this time it’s for the ever-mysterious Google netbook. Here’s the specs I grabbed:

10.1″ 1280×720 HD-ready multitouch screen

NVIDIA Tegra

ARM-based processor

Storage: 64GB SSD

2GB RAM

WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, Ethernet, GPS (optional)

USB, webcam, 3.5mm audio jack, multi-card reader

4 or 6 cell battery

Google Chrome OS with all the other Google apps like Google Earth,Google Wave, Google Voice, etc.

As mentioned previously, this is expected to launch during the holiday season next year 2010 . Reports also says that it will be priced at sub-$300 and subsidized and it will be Google that will be selling it directly as well as through 3G carriers. Now all these are just speculation since Google has kept mum on the actual specs of the device but with a big player like this entering the netbook space, you can be sure that it will cause quite a stir in the months to come.

Pegatron are to release a smartbook before the end of 2009. The smartbook will feature an 8.9 inch display, but opts for an ARM processor instead of the traditional Intel Atom netbook processor. While the ARM processor may not be as powerful as Intel processors, the CPU will actually use less power. Standard specs of the smartbook includes a 2 cell battery, which seems pretty disappointing, but it’s said to last for about 8 hours due to the ARM 800MHz processor.

As the ARM processor isn’t supported by Windows XP, Vista or 7, the smartbook will most probably run Linux, but it could also possibly come with Google Android or Windows CE. When the smartbook is released, it should retail for around $120.

Said ARM-based netbooks will come in a 7-inch and 10-inch netbooks and would have the Windows CE for their operating systems. Both these ARM-based netbooks will be capable of fulfilling various office tasks such as email and Internet browsing but won’t be powerful enough for 3D gaming as well as supporting Windows XP or Vista.

The 7-inch ARM-based netbooks would be utilizing the 300MHz ARM9 Core Processor, which may not be as Powerful as the Atom or NVIDIA processors but certainly has longer battery life.
