If you are one of those adventurous Eee PC owners that have had the desire to install OS X on your netbook and turn it into a “Hackintosh” then you may be pleased to know that thanks to some persistant hackers and a new application, your sound issues - it has been virtually impossible to get sound working when using OS X on an Eee PC until now - can all be solved.

Hackers have created a work around, similar to the method used to get sound working on the MSI Wind. You need to install a different audio driver and the Apple developer tools first of all and then grab the new application that developer ipis OS X have created. Audieee allows the sound to be controlled from the menu bar on OS X, allowing you to switch between headphones/speakers as your output of choice, something that doesnt happen automatically yet but, be sure there is a hacker somewhere working on a fix for this too.

Apparently, Asus have indicated that they intend to create a 12 inch netbook in the near future. It is destined to be an ‘ultra thin model’ according to Digitimes but, the question is - when does a netbook become too big to be classed as a ‘netbook’?

Asus created the netbook and once upon a time the netbook was a 7inch, highly portable unit that wasn’t truly a notebook and the netbook tag fitted the product perfectly. Now, netbooks have bulked themselves out and we see 10.2″ models, for example the ‘top of the range’ S101 Eee PC from Asus themselves. 10.2″ is ok, we’re used to that but, 12 inch…..that’s a notebook isn’t it?  Well, yes, that’s what Asustek have decided, their new 12″ model will not be tagged as a netbook - Asus are adding to the notebook range in their collection of ‘books’ and the notebook tag fits this model a little better, it’s all very well clinging on to the netbook tag, netbooks are incredibly and increasingly popular so it’s understandable why any company would tag their products as a netbook if they can get away with it but, Asus seem happy to move their bigger model into the ‘notebook’ range, although the tie-in to the Eee PC range should keep that netbook tag working for the company regardless of the size of screen.

The 12″ netbook, will be a part of the ZX series and will be of similar specification to the S101. With specs like that and the inclusion of a larger screen with 16:10 aspect ratio, Asustek could be onto a winner, again. Digitimes’ sources have predicted the unit will cost below NT$30,000.

To clarify where the netbook line stopped and the notebook line started, Asus president Jerry Shen stated: “that any device with display larger than 10.x-inches is not a netbook. Related devices with 11-inch or larger displays will be part of the company’s Asus brand”. So thats clear then, 12″ is a notebook, the man said so.

The Asus Eee PC has already had the Windows 7 treatment and it ran pretty well on the new Microsoft operating system, the pre-beta version anyway. Next netbook up to take the Windows 7 test was the MSI Wind and sure enough, it ran the OS well and passed the test with flying stars. Of course, feeling a little left out and sure that it could compete with it’s Atom based netbook cousins, the HP 2133 Mini-Note came along shortly after and has also been tested running Windows 7. Unfortunately the results aren’t quite so impressive for the HP netbook.

Frustrated that your netbook won’t allow you to play games that need a little more graphics ‘power’ to run them? Well, Asus could be just about to take gaming on their Eee PC’s to the next stage.

Asus have said that they could be releasing a netbook in the near future that could possibly have dedicated graphics that would allow gamers to run more resource intensive games. The spokesperson also said that this netbook would definitely be an Eee PC and is not to be confused with the Asus N10 which also has dedicated graphics.

This is all just a rumor right now, nothing is confirmed and Asus already have the 10 inch N10 for small screen gaming but, we’ll keep you informed of any news of the Eee PC becoming an oversized handheld console as it comes in.

Due to the ‘rebrandability’ of the MSI Wind netbook, DigiTimes have reported that sales have been boosted hugely and the Wind (and all of it’s rebranded brothers and sisters) is expected to have shipped around 700,000 units by the end of 2008 - more than MSI expected to sell, pushing them closer to the top ten hardware vendor list.

There are many rebranded versions of the MSI Wind in Asia and Europe, which are simply the MSI netbook with a different name attached to them. It seems that customers are clambering to buy these ‘clones’ of the Wind and with a solid build and decent specs for a netbook, it’s easy to see why.

Ironically, 700,000 sales would equal the amount of Asus Eee PC’s sold in September 08 which clearly shows that MSI still have a long way to go if they are going to compete with Asus in this market.

JkOnTheRun received a tip from Pereira about a netbook retailing at under $300 and it isn’t the touchscreen Asus Eee PC, due to come out next year, either.

The model on offer is the Asus Eee PC 900A which is set to retail for $299 at Best Buy stores. That’s a great reduction off the original launch price of $465 in August.

However, with just a 4GB SSD, it could be worth waiting to see if the Eee PC 701SDX will come fitted with a 4GB or 8GB for the same $300 price tag before making a purchase. If you can’t wait for news on the 701SDX though and you’re looking for a cheap netbook, it seems most stores have them in stock, for now.

Thanks to a press release posted by jkontherun, we know that Super Talent are producing three mini PCIe SSD’s which will be made specifically for the hugely popular ASUS Eee PC, expected in the next month or so.

Three drive sizes, a 16GB, a 32GB and a 64GB will be available and will have a maximum 40MB/sec read speed and a maximum 15MB/sec write speed.  They will cost $53, $79 and $149 respectively, which seems a reasonable price for the size of the drives.
