Intel updates its Classmate PC designs so that they can incorporate the latest Intel Atom Cedar Trail processors. The new stream of netbooks and convertible tablets are designed to be more rugged and improve on lots of touch features and longer battery life.

Classmate computers are designed for children and feature sturdy chassis, built-in handles and other education-based hardware and software.

CTL is one of Intel’s Classmate PC partners and now they have convertible tablet-slash-netbook based on the latest Classmate design.

The CTL2go Classmate PC NL3 is a 10-incher with 1366×768 resolution. The device can be folded down overthe keyboard for use in slate mode. It can be folded down over the keyboard for use in slate mode. The tablet has resistive touch panel allows writing and drawing on the screen with the stylus (included). The stylus slides into a hole in the case for safe keeping. The resistive touchscreens are not as sensitive as a display that features Wacom or N-Trig active digitzer, but they offer a much cheaper way to use a stylus.

The biggest change in this platform is the support for Intel Atom N2600 or N2800 Cedar Trail processors. CTL offers a model with the 1.66GHz N2600 chip. It is believed that this device will run for 10 hours, almost 4 hours more of what the Pine Trail chips offered.

Cedar Trail processors can now handle 1080p HD video playback, that’s why CTL and other Classmate PC manufacturers added HDMI ports while keeping the standard VGA ports.

If the rugged, child-friendly case wasn’t enough to sway you to the CTL2go NL3 was designed to be used in the classroom. The computer also has two headphone jacks. Several students can plug into the same computer to listen to the same song, audio or instructional material.

CTL’s Classmate device supports up to 2GB of RAM, HD or SSD for storage. It also has WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and optional 3G. It weighs about 3.5 lbs and sells for $499 and up.

While the Classmate line is specifically designed for students, some people actually buy this product for its rugged design and its ability to withstand minor abuse while being affordable at the same time.

The demo unit won’t exactly be the final unit to be shipped. CTL is using a new chiclet, or island-style keyboard with flatkeys and little space between each key. It is told that this makes the keyboard seem larger as early Classmate PC keyboards feel cramped if you are an adult.

Intel says that there are 6 million Classmate PC computers that have shipped globally over the previous years including the convertible tablets like the CTL NL3 but also the traditional netbook-style computers without touchscreens like the new CTL 2go Classmate PC E12.

New Classmate PC netbooks and convertible tablets from CTL started to appear as the company introduces the 2go Classmate PC NL3, which is based on Intel’s reference design, at CES. It’s a 10-inch convertible tablet-style netbook that is built around a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail dual core processor.

The computer measures 10.6″ x 8.2″ x 1.2″ and weighs 3.5 pounds. It has a 1366 x 768pixel display that’s connected to the base with a swiveling hinge. Simply twist the screen and fold it down over the keyboard and use it as a slate.

While today’s resistive touchscreens get a lot of flak, its resistive touch panel allows students to write and draw on the screen using a stylus. An active digitizer and digital pen may cost more, but they work even better with Windows tablets.

While it targets students, its body has a ruggedized case design, a scratch-resistant and water-resistant screen and a spill-proof keyboard. Its battery also provides longer operating time of up to 10 hours on a charge.

The 2Go Classmate PC NL3 features 2 USB, HDMI and VGA ports, Ethernet, mic and headphone jacks as well as an SD card slot. It also has a WiFi, Bluetooth and optional 3G connectivity.

CTL NL3 can be purchased for $499 and up.

Most of the educational institutions opt for the non-convertible Classmate since they were having trouble with the keyboard size and durability of the convertible version. Inking on these devices should feel great though since it was made to emulate paper as closely as possible.

Not to be outed in their own backyard, Intel’s giving their own education-oriented netbook line the Pine Trail treatment with the upgraded Classmate PC. M&A Technology’s retail site has a posting of this new netbook, listed as Companion PC 10. In it is a Atom N450 processor (posted at the site as having 1.6GHz), 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 10.1″ 1024×600 screen, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, LAN, 1.3MP webcam, card reader, 3 USB ports and VGA out. While this netbook will definitely not be able to pull out any magical gadgets out of its breast pocket, it does look cuter, if not cooler than most other netbooks. It’s a Doraemon-styled mini-notebook PC (OK, a netbook, if you don’t want me trying too hard) from a company called KuroKids, which should be able to bring joy to any child’s face, provided he doesn’t break the thing within five minutes of him getting it in the first place. Only 800 units of this cute netbook will be made available, with each costing roughly $487 USD each. Yes, now that you know the price, it isn’t as cute as it was five seconds ago, no? No word on a release date outside of Taiwan, but it’s likely that this will be sold exclusively in that part of Asia.

In fact, it was one of the pioneers of the netbook market following the Eee PC. Unfortunately, the said netbook didn’t really made it big because of so many reasons which we we rather not delve into anymore since we’ve already covered it in the past. Let’s just concentrate on some bit of a good news from the Classmate PC front.

If you would recall, Intel has previously snagged a deal with the Portugal Government which will be manufacturing around 500,000 units of the netbook. Even better good news is that the Venezuelan goverment has also expressed interest in the Classmate PC with a plan to order more than one million units of the said netbook. If the deal is finalized, the Venezuelan government will be getting their Classmate PC’s from Portugal which has a manufacturing agreement with Intel.

Those are certainly some numbers and would definitely add to the Classmate PC’s sales figures. The deal just might eclipse the OLPC which has been geared for the use of developing countries. Although the price for the said deal with the Venezuelan government was not disclosed, it is said that the Classmate PC deal is part of a larger technology deal between Venezuela and Portugal which is estimated to cost around $3 billion.

It looks like Intel is prepping up a new version of their netbook, the Classmate PC. For its third iteration, the Intel Classmate PC 3 is getting its much needed software and hardware upgrade. Although, there’s not much to brag about the Classmate PC’s new features and specs, it still worth noting that despite its not so successful run, Intel is still trying to improve on its product.

So, what’s new with the Intel Classmate PC 3? Words on the streets say that it will now come with the Atom Processor, an 8.9-inch (1024×600) LCD screen, an SD card slot, USB ports and SSD.

Now for the most interesting part, the Classmate PC 3 will now be sporting a convertible look, so I guess we can pretty much call it now as the Classmate PC 3 “Tablet PC netbook?”
