Whether netbook owners are becoming more rough in their handling of netbooks, I don’t know, but we now have another netbook which is designed as a “rugged” netbook. The new Intel Classmate netbook now offers a more rugged and protective design, with air cushions and crash zones around the fragile areas like the display and corners. The new design aims to protect the netbook from drops, as well as rough handling and stacking.

The Classmate features an antimicrobial coating on the touchpad and keyboard, which has been improved from previous devices. The coating protects against bacteria, mold and other microorganisms from being transferred to and from the device.

The keyboard and touchpad along with the display has also been made water resistant. There are water holes on the bottom where the liquid can drain down to. It can protect spills of up to 100cc of liquid.

With regards to the specifications of these netbooks, the Classmate comes with a 10 inch display, a power efficient motherboard, coupled with a 45nm Atom CPU. It also comes with a 6 cell battery, which can provide a full days use on one charge. The range of netbooks will be released to schools and other institutions. Whether or not the Classmate netbooks will also make it to general consumers isn’t known, nor is the pricing of the Intel Classmate netbooks.
